90-year-old mechanic retires after 75 years with the same company

A 90-year-old mechanic retires after 75 years of working with the same company. Bryan Webb began working at Vauxhall as an apprentice in 1946 when he strolled into the office and inquired about available positions.

On Wednesday, his colleagues gave him a ceremonial spanner and unveiled a plaque in his honor. He says he will miss working but now he is looking forward to having a cup of tea and sleeping in the afternoons. Mr. Webb began his career as a mechanical apprentice. He held several positions until working as a warranty administrator for the previous 34 years. He stated that he was promoted to foreman in the 1950s after his work as a mechanic.

If you keep working, it keeps you young

He stated that when he reached the age of 65, he decided to stay “for a couple of years, and it turned into 25.” “I always thought if you keep working it keeps you young. If you work it keeps you going, it gets you up in the morning to get out,” he says.

“I was in workshop control and working with trucks and cars. You had to wash engines off out in the cold and it was hard work in the early days but things change, cars change, and when you strip an engine now it’s clean rather than being full of muck,” he adds.

Julian Bawdon, the local branch director, claimed he joined in 2008 and asked Mr. Webb how long he planned to stay. “I said to him as long as he can still do the job he can carry on, and here we are today with 75 years service,” Julian said. “He’s as bright as a button. Bryan’s a character and we’ll all miss having him around,” he adds.
