Rupee jumps 31 paise to end at 7559 against US dollar

Mumbai Dec 21 PTI The rupee surged by 31 paise to close at 7559 provisional against the US dollar on Tuesday as positive domestic equities and a weak American currency in the overseas markets boosted investor sentiment At the interbank forex market the domestic unit opened strong at 7574 against the greenback and witnessed an intra-day high of 7541 and a low of 7574 during the days trade It finally ended at 7559 a dollar In the previous session the rupee had settled at 7590 against the US dollar On the domestic equity market front the BSE Sensex surged 49700 points or 089 per cent to end at 5631901 while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 15665 points or 094 per cent to 1677085 Meanwhile the dollar index which gauges the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies declined 020 per cent to 9635 Brent crude futures the global oil benchmark surged 087 per cent to USD 7214 per barrel Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers in the capital market on Monday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 356536 crore according to exchange data PTI BAL MR
