The world number two, Medvedev was stunned by 35th-ranked Frenchman Ugo Humbert despite leading by a set and 3-0. After trailing 0-3 in the second set, Humbert pulled off the biggest win of his career, upsetting world No.2 6-7(5) 7-5 7-6(2) at Ken Rosewall Arena on Sunday. The win was world No. 35 Humbert’s first over a top-three player. Notably, he has now won six of his last eight matches against top 10 players.
Who is Ugo Humbert?
Ugo Humbert was born in Metz in 1998. He started playing tennis at the age of five after watching his father play the sport. Humbert revealed in one of his 2019 interviews that he wanted tennis to be his full-time profession from a young age. He decided to move to Poitiers at the age of 12, to train at the French Tennis Federation. But then he suffered injuries that kept him away from tennis during his early years.
As a junior, Ugo Humbert climbed to No. 18 in the world rankings, later making the transition onto the senior tour in 2016. At the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, he reached the fourth round after defeating Gaël Monfils and Félix Auger-Aliassime. The year 2020, was a game-changing year for Humbert. The Frenchman’s first ATP title came at the season-opening 2020 ASB Classic, where he defeated countryman Benoit Paire in the summit clash. He won his second ATP title in Antwerp in October 2020, beating fellow Next Generation ATP Finals player Alex De Minaur in straight sets. He won his third title and first ATP 500 in June 2021 in Halle, beating world No. 7 Andrey Rublev in the final.
Two of the biggest wins of Humbert’s career, however, came at the 2021 Noventi Open in Halle, where he beat Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev en route to his first ATP 500 title. Ugo Humbert won his first ATP 250 main-draw match on home soil at the 2018 Moselle Open, defeating Bernard Tomic in three sets. He currently holds six Challenger titles and reached the final in three other Challenger events.
