Operation Unicorn is in motion. It is called Operation Unicorn because the palace decided to name the operation after Scotland’s national animal if the monarch died in Scotland, reported news agency AFP. The UK authorities thought of Operation Unicorn if Queen dies in Scotland.
Certain bits of Operation Unicorn has been activated. BBC anchors are dressed in black and channels have switched to rolling news. UK’s national anthem will also be amended to incorporate the next in line to the British throne.
According to The Politico’s reports, September 8 will be declared as “D-Day” and each day following the Queen’s funeral will be referred to as D1, D2 till the tenth day of her death.
UK’s currency notes and coins will be changed gradually with images of the Queen by that of Charles over the years. The national anthem will again shift back to “God Save the King”. “I think it`s going to be an extraordinary psychological dislocation for British people,” Professor Murphy said. “By now you`ve pretty much got to be in your late 70s or 80s to remember a time when Queen Elizabeth wasn`t on the throne.”
The national flag at Downing Street has been lowered to half-mast. The politicians are also preparing a motion of condolence and a state funeral. The royal family is already at Balmoral.
According to one official memo, the code for conveying the message of the Queen’s death is “London bridge is down.” According to the report, a massive security operation will be launched to manage crowds and travel chaos.
The agencies have reported that as per Operation Unicorn, the Queen’s body will be brought from Scotland to Buckingham Palace in London within the first week of her death. Later for a short time, it will be moved to Holyroodhouse from Balmoral.
After this, her body will be carried in a procession up the Royal Mile the city’s main thoroughfare, to St. Giles Cathedral for a memorial service. Following that, it will be transported to London on a royal train from Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, where it will be received by newly appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss.
The newly appointed UK PM Liz Truss will be the first member of the government to make a statement. Apart from the statement from PM and other members, gun salutes will be arranged at all saluting stations. PM Liz put on the audience with the new king. King Charles will deliver a broadcast to the nation.
The funeral will be held on the tenth day at Westminster Abbey. Queen Elizabeth II will be buried in the castle’s King George VI Memorial Chapel.
