Bruce Lee, a Chinese American martial arts legend, will be the subject of a movie from Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, who also directed “Life of Pi” and “Brokeback Mountain.” Mason Lee, the son of director Ang Lee, will play the lead role in Sony’s 3000 Pictures project.
The script is being adapted by Dan Futterman, who also penned “Capote” and “Foxcatcher.” Earlier draughts of the script were written by Jean Castelli, Alex Law, Mabel Cheung, and Wells Tower, according to ‘Variety.

Bruce Lee, who died in 1973 at the age of 32, had a brief but lasting presence in Hollywood as an actor, director, and martial arts expert. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, his movies, such as “Fist of Fury,” “Enter the Dragon,” and “The Way of the Dragon,” as well as the TV show “The Green Hornet,” helped make martial arts popular all over the world.
“Accepted as neither fully American nor Fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Kung Fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionised both the martial arts and action cinema,” Ang Lee said in a statement.
“I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”
“‘Bruce Lee‘ is a longtime passion project for Ang and a deeply emotional story depicting the triumphs and conflicts of one of the foremost real-life action heroes of our time,” Gabler said. “All of us at Sony and 3000 Pictures are proud to help Ang and his filmmaking team create what we believe will be an extraordinary theatrical event.”

An accomplished director, Ang Lee has won numerous Academy Awards for his work, including four for “Life of Pi,” three for “Brokeback Mountain,” and two for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” His films have also performed well at the box office. Sense and Sensibility, Hulk, Lust, and Billy Lynn’s “Long Halftime Walk” are among his other acting credits.
Mason Lee, 32, has appeared in “The Hangover Part II” and Billy Lynn’s “Long Halftime Walk.” The most recent films in which he appeared were “Who Killed Cock Robin,” “Limbo,” and the Taiwanese romantic comedy “Stand By Me.”
