Twitter CEO Elon Musk issued a clarification after urging Americans to vote for the “Republican Congress” in today’s (Tuesday) midterm elections.

“To be clear, my historical party affiliation has been Independent, with an actual voting history of entirely Democrat until this year,” tweeted Musk before adding, “And I’m open to the idea of voting Democrat again in the future.”

Musk was making an effort to even things out after his prior statement about Republicans being preferred in the polls caused a stir.

The billionaire came close to endorsing the Republican Party in his tweet targeted at “independent-minded voters.”

Musk tweeted, “To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic.”

A little while later, Musk tweeted again, this time attempting to defend his position and emphasizing that he was addressing “independent voters.”

He continued in the subsequent tweet, “Hardcore Democrats or Republicans never vote for the other side, so independent voters are the ones who decide who’s in charge!”

For both parties, the US midterm elections are vital. An open endorsement from Musk might further turn the tide given that surveys indicate Republicans have an advantage over Democrats in both the Senate and the House.

All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 33 or 34 of the 100 seats in the US Senate are up for election during the midterm elections.

Since Musk seized control of Twitter, the leftist Twitter community has been in a rage, accusing the billionaire of using the microblogging service as his propaganda tool.
