Amazon CEO says he likes hiring 'dissatisfied and restless' people

The “restless and dissatisfied” are the ideal job seekers, according to Adam Selipsky, CEO of Amazon Web Services. Although most people would consider these characteristics to be undesirable, Selipsky’s hunt for them has a lot to do with innovation.

One wouldn’t feel the need to innovate unless they are dissatisfied with the status quo, the Amazon CEO told Fortune magazine.

“We find people who want to be on a mission, who are restless and dissatisfied with what they see around them, who are curious about how the world works and how it can work,” Selipsky told Fortune magazine.

Selipsky claims that after discovering those with this restless drive to remake themselves, he works to create an environment where they can do so freely.

“We take constraints out of their way and try to remove as many dependencies as we can from them, so they’re free in a single-minded way to focus on their mission,” he added.

According to Selipsky, “good and delightful things” can occur with enough time.

He gave advice to the newer generation of professionals to sharpen their abilities, discover their passions, and surround themselves with like-minded others.

In the interview, he continued, “Make sure you’ve got the right reputation.”

Employees are being let go in several Amazon departments in the meanwhile. According to reports, the corporation wants to let go of 10,000 employees.

According to CEO Andy Jassy, throughout his 18 months in the top position, firing people was the hardest choice he had to make.

He justified the layoffs by stating that “the economy remains in a challenging spot and we’ve hired rapidly the last several years.”
