Judge rules against Amazon for breaking labor laws

A judge from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on Monday ruled against Amazon for treating workers if they attempt to unionize. Judge Benjamin Green noted that the e-commerce conglomerate illegally threatened workers that they will miss out on improved benefits and regular hikes. As per US labor laws, any employer or firm is not allowed to coerce or stop employees from unionizing. Additionally, Judge ordered the company to post signs across its warehouse. These are for reminding employees about their lawful right to engage and bargain with the company.

More on Amazon’s move against its workers unionizing

In March 2022, 2,600 employees at the Amazon JFK8 fulfillment center in Staten Island overwhelmingly voted to be a part of the Amazon Labor Union (ALU). Later in May 2022, the firm tried overturning the unionization and submitted a filing to NLRB stating labor law violation. However, 24 days following the hearing, the board upheld the union’s victory.

Moreover, the ruling was passed after Amazon was deemed guilty of removing a post from its internal message board. The message was uring workers to sign a petition making Juneteenth a paid holiday. “We’re glad that the judge dismissed 19. Nearly all of the allegations in this case and correctly called the 3 remaining ones ‘not obvious or clear cut,’” stated an Amazon spokesperson. The firm also took relief that the judge dismissed other charges. This is including the one where officials threatened to reduce wages for paying union dues.
