According to new research, hate crimes against Asian Americans increased dramatically in the United States last year.

According to NBC, the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, which gathered the hate crime data, anti-Asian sentiment increased by 339 percent in 2021 compared to 2020.

According to the survey, there was an overall 11 percent increase in suspected hate crimes against Asian Americans recorded to police in approximately a dozen of the US’s largest cities.

As per the data, hate crime incidences in New York City have increased dramatically. Anti-Asian hate crimes increased by 343 percent from 30 in 2020 to 133 in 2021.

San Francisco likewise had a tremendous increase in crime, going from nine to sixty, a 567 percent increase. Similarly, the city of Los Angeles had a 173 percent increase.

Experts say the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans directly connects to racism spurred by the Covid pandemic.

Other minority groups, in addition to Asian Americans, have seen an increase in other-minority sentiment.

The survey mentions, the Jewish community in New York experienced the highest rate of hate crimes last year. Researchers attribute the rise in part to the three-week Gaza War in May.

Gay men were the most targeted in Chicago.

Also, Los Angeles “recorded the most hate crimes of any US city this century” in 2021 alone. New York was following closely after.

Hate events which include nonviolent forms of prejudice such as harassment and shunning were a part of the report too.

The Stop AAPI Hate non-profit organization documented roughly 10,370 hate incidents between March 2020 and September 2021.
