Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) tried adapting glass manufacturing in space using AI. Here’s all about the new feat in Space.

The lack of gravity in space impacts a wide range of physics and offers a chance for conducting experiments that cannot be conducted on Earth. On Monday, astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) tried adapting the glass manufacturing process in space using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

According to NASA, the study has the potential to “benefit numerous Earth- and space-based industries”.

“NASA Flight Engineer Kjell Lindgren set up hardware for the Intelligent Glass Optics experiment for operations inside the Microgravity Science Glovebox on Tuesday afternoon. Observations from the investigation may advance professions such as communications, aerospace, medicine, and astronomy,” stated NASA.

“Jessica Watkins started her day partnering with NASA Flight Engineer Bob Hines for an investigation. This explores how weightlessness affects dexterous manipulation. The duo took turns seated in a unique apparatus inside the Columbus laboratory module. It helps scientists understand how astronauts grip and manipulate objects in space. Insights may inform the design of intelligent spacecraft interfaces and provide a deeper understanding of the human nervous system,” added the NASA statement.

Apart from the AI experiment, astronauts also studied space-caused bone loss. Astronauts suffer a loss of bone mass due to their extended stay in zero gravity conditions.

Denis Matveev and Sergey Korsakov, flight engineers from Roscosmos also collected microbe samples from the modules. The sample collection was from the Russian segments of the ISS for analysis. Matveev also documented his meals and drinks to study space-caused bone loss.
