New Delhi: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) on Friday invited bids for the design and construction of an underground station at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex and a tunnel for the bullet train project, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said.
“Bids invited for design and construction of Mumbai underground station and tunnels for Bullet Train,” Mr. Vaishnaw said.

As part of the bullet train project, the train will be run between Ahmedabad -Mumbai on a high-speed rail corridor at a speed of 320 kmph, covering a distance of 508 km across 12 stations.
This is the first set of bids invited after the Shine-Fadnavis government was formed in Maharashtra. The new government has given the green flag to the project, which remained inactive during the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government.
While the railway minister’s tweet indicated that there were multiple tunnels, the NHSRCL clarified that there is only one 467-meter cut and cover tunnel and a 66-meter ventilation shaft in the tender package. This shaft will also be used for taking out the tunnel boring machine (retrieval shaft).
The train is expected to reduce the travel time to about three hours from the current six hours between the two cities.
The cost for the superfast train, which will be shared between the state and central government is ₹1.08 lakh crore, out of which, the Central government will pay ₹10,000 crore to the NHSRCL, and the two states involved – Gujarat and Maharashtra – will pay ₹5,000 crores each and the rest is to be paid by Japan through a loan at 0.1% interest, as per the shareholding pattern.
Mr. Vaishnaw has said that Indian might gets its first operational bullet train by the year 2026.
