Courteney Cox reveals where Gale Weathers is when Scream 2022 starts

When Scream premieres, Courteney Cox has revealed where moviegoers will find Gale Weathers. The franchise began in 1996 under the direction of the late Wes Craven. The Friends alum has ever since been a mainstay. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s newest film will be released in theaters early next year.

The Scream franchise has been a recurring cornerstone of the slasher genre since its inception in 1996. Scream largely follows the adventures of Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and journalist Gale Weathers. They investigate a string of killings in the fictional Woodsboro, California (though the franchise has frequently changed locations). The trio had survived four confrontations with the Ghostface assailant. Dewey and Gale even become on-again, off-again lovers during the ordeal.

The new Scream is set to premiere in 2022. Viewers will be able to see all of their favorite (surviving) characters, including Gale Weathers, for the first time. But where has Gale been all this time? Cox discussed the present situation of the intrepid journalist with Total Film (via HelloSydney.com). Courteney Cox reveals Gale Weathers and her work life is in terrific shape. But her personal life is in disarray due to her weaknesses, she said in her statements.

Cox elaborated:

Gale now works on a morning show. She has the respect of a job where she gets to call the shots and has an audience that is tuning in just for her. She’s in a better place, as far as her professional life goes. I don’t think that personally, she’s in a great place. But, you know, she’s very selfish. So I’m not sure she’s ever going to be one to find happiness in that way.

The Scream franchise has always been fascinated with Gale’s character evolution, despite being essentially a narrative about Sydney Prescott. In her work as a journalist and developer of real crime content, she has vacillated between selfishness and selflessness. Even her relationship with Dewey is an example of this. Having bloomed in Scream 2 but soon deteriorating in later installments owing to character differences. Although she has matured throughout the last four films, Cox believes she is still primarily a selfish character.

All of this makes fans worry if Gale Weathers will be able to survive the events of Scream 2022. The franchise differs from many other slasher franchises. It has managed to preserve its core cast (with a few exceptions). However, no one is ever completely safe in the horror genre. So the directors may use Weathers as a sacrificial lamb to remind the viewer that they mean business. Similar to what Craven did with Drew Barrymore in the original film’s opening sequence back in 1996. On January 14, 2022, Scream will release in theaters.
