Amid the political slugfest in Maharashtra sparked by rebellion led by senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, the Uddhav Thackeray’s party had taken stringent position against the rebels camping in Assam by sending them disqualification notices and also removing Shinde from the position of Legislature party leader.
Now the rebel group, which comprises over 35 Shiv Sena MLAs and 8 ministers, has moved the Supreme Court with two separate petitions filed- one challenging the appointment of Ajay Choudhari as Shiv Sena Legislature Party leader and second challenging the disqualification notices issued by the deputy speaker of Maharashtra Assembly to 16 rebel Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
The matter is likely to be mentioned tomorrow for urgent listing,
The current political turmoil in the state was triggered by Eknath Shinde, who, along with several MLAs, went incommunicado after the MLC poll results. They are currently camping in a hotel in Guwahati. More MLAs, including independents, have joined the rebel camp since then.
287 is the total strength of the Maharashtra Assembly and the majority, in the event of a trust vote, is 144. The ruling coalition of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress has 169 seats. If the MLAs led by Eknath Shinde resign, then the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) strength will fall below the majority mark, leading to the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government.
