Five days after Wrestler Nisha Dahiya won bronze medal at a world championship, Nisha and her brother Suraj have been shot dead is a fake news.
On Friday, Nisha Dahiya bagged a bronze medal in 65 kg at Wrestling U-23 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. PM Narendra Modi also praised her along with other women wrestlers for their breakthrough performance.
Nisha Dahiya won a gold medal at the cadet National Championships in 2014 in Srinagar and repeated the feat next year. Her first international medal came in 2014 when she returned with a bronze in the 49kg category from Asian Championships. She won a silver in 60kg category next year. She also won a bronze at the National Championships in 2015.
After winning the bronze, she tested positive for meldonium, a drug which was banned by World Anti-Doping Agency in 2016. Following this, the wrestler faced a four-year ban. Meldonium is the same drug that got tennis superstar Maria Sharapova in trouble.
She was about to get a Railways job after having won cadet medals and National Championships bronze in 2015 but the opportunity slipped after the doping ban. However, Nisha Dahiya made a comeback in 2019 after winning the U-23 National Championships in October and a gold medal in the 65kg in Jalandhar. During the ban period, Nisha thought of quitting the sport and slowly found her close friends deserting her. But she did not give up and hung in, according to Scroll.in.
Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik supported her during the ban. She was able to train with Sakshi in Rothak and even attended national camps along with Sakshi.
