Mumbai: Two lawyers have filed a plea in the supreme court against the recently unveiled national emblem at the top of the new parliament building alleging that its design violates the State Emblem of India (Prohibition Against Improper Use) Act.

The plea was filed by advocates Aldanish Rein and Ramesh Kumar Mishra mentioning that the lions portrayed in the emblem appear to be “ferocious and aggressive” with their “mouth open and canine visible.” The petition claimed that the change to the design of the national coat of arms was tyrannical.

The opposition members and activists have accused the government of misrepresenting the national emblem by replacing the “graceful and regally confident” lions of Ashoka with menacing and aggressive lions, and called for immediate change.

Prime Minister  Modi unveiled the national emblem on July 11 which is casted on the roof of the new Parliament building and also attended a religious ceremony at the site.
