Lionel Messi has reportedly received a formal two-year contract offer from Paris Saint-Germain after his exit from Barcelona. Barcelona confirmed that Messi would not sign a new contract with the club due to ‘financial concerns and structural obstacles’.

According to Sky Sports, the French giants (PSG) have offered Messi an initial two-year deal, thought to be worth £25m a year after tax, and Messi and his representatives are now reviewing and considering it carefully.

On Sunday, during his farewell news conference when he was asked if PSG will be his next move, Lionel Messi said: “That is one possibility, to reach those heights. I’ve got nothing confirmed with anybody. I had a lot of calls, a lot of interested clubs. At the moment, nothing is closed, but we are talking about a lot of things.”

During the farewell press conference, Messi was in tears as he ended his 21 years with the club. He received a standing ovation in his final Barcelona press conference. Since his senior debut in 2003, Messi had spent his entire career at Barcelona and went on to score 672 goals in 778 appearances.

“I did everything possible and the club, Laporta, they couldn’t do it because of La Liga. I’ve heard things said about me, that I didn’t want to continue, but on my life, we did everything we could because I wanted to stay. Last year, I didn’t want to stay and I said it; this year, I wanted to stay and we couldn’t.” said Lionel Messi in his final press conference

“I’m not ready for this. And honesty, with all the nonsense with the burofax, I was convinced of what I wanted to say. We thought we would be staying in Barcelona. The time we have had here has been amazing.” He added

Barcelona president Joan Laporta in the press conference explained the reason behind not renewing Messi’s contract. He said the club was not able to register Lionel Messi’s contract because of LaLiga’s fair play rules.

“What we are spending is a lot more than we expected and the current contracts mean that we have this salary mass of great magnitude. This is all tied to fair play. La Liga doesn’t follow the criteria of cash, that is why we couldn’t fit in the first contract that we agreed with Leo Messi,” said Laporta.
