Former Himachal Pradesh BJP president and former minister Khimi Ram Sharma has joined the Congress in Delhi. Mr Ram has been an MLA twice. He was reportedly upset after he was not offered a ticket in the 2017 assembly elections. He today joined the Congress in the presence of the party’s state in-charge Rajiv Shukla in Delhi. On this occasion, party’s co-in-charge Gurkeerat Singh and former minister and senior leader of Himachal Congress Sudhir Sharma were also present.
Khimi Ram entered politics in 1999 and contested his first election for Zilla Parishad member in 2000 and won. Thereafter, he was elected to the post of President of Zilla Parishad, Kullu. In 2003, he got ticket to contest from Banjar Assembly Constituency from BJP and he won the election. In 2007, he again won the election from Banjar, and in 2007 he was unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. In 2009, he was appointed as the BJP chief of Himachal Pradesh. Thereafter, in 2011, he became a member of the state cabinet and served as the Forest Minister of Himachal Pradesh. He has been a confidant of Professor Prem Kumar Dhumal. He lost in the 2012 election. After this, he was not offered a ticket in 2017.
On 1 September 2021, Khimi Ram Sharma organized a meeting on the demand of his supporters, in which he announced to contest the upcoming assembly elections. Now in the assembly elections to be held in 2022, he can increase the difficulty of BJP from Banjar.
