Monkeypox

Avoid contact with any materials, such as bedding, that have been in contact with a sick person. Isolate infected patients from others.

New Delhi: The ministry of health and family welfare released a guideline on managing the Monkeypox disease on Friday.

This comes a day after India’s first confirmed case of monkeypox was recorded in Kerala’s Kollam.

The guidelines include the epidemiology of the disease, contact and case definitions, clinical features and its complications, diagnosis, case management, risk communication, and guidance on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).

The guidelines highlight surveillance and rapid identification of new cases as the key public health measures for outbreak containment. As per the guidelines, contacts should be monitored at least daily for the onset of signs/symptoms for 21 days (as per case definition) from the last contact with a patient or their contaminated materials during the infectious period.

Preventive Mesures

The key measures that can be taken to prevent infection with the monkeypox virus:

  • Avoid contact with any materials, such as bedding, that have been in contact with a sick person.
  • Isolate infected patients from others.
  • Practice good hand hygiene after contact with infected animals or humans. For example, washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.

Symptoms:-Fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes are the most common symptoms of monkeypox.

The monkeypox virus has now spread to 62 countries, including India.
