Last week 17 trafficked women were rescued from Navi Mumbai wherein Harmony Foundation played a crucial role in their freedom from sexual slavery. Harmony Foundation joined in celebrating the personal freedom of these women along with celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on this 75th Independence Day. The foundation distributed sanitary and personal hygiene kits to these rescued victims and celebrated the independence of these unfortunate victims of trafficking who have finally tasted the precious freedom that was curbed by the vicious cycle of sexual exploitation.
The celebration took place on the eve of Independence Day, on August 14th, 2022, at the Navjeevan Mahila Vastigruha, Deonar, at 4.30 pm. Independence Day plays a monumental role in our lives wherein we commemorate the immortal legacy of our freedom fighters who gave their sweat and blood for our freedom. At this year’s 75th celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Harmony Foundation paid homage and reverence to the impeccable efforts of our revered freedom fighters, as it is because of them that we can all cherish and celebrate our much-treasured freedom in view of a thriving developing India.
However, even after 75 years of independence, there are still many for whom independence is a distant dream as they are exploited by those who commit heinous crimes and oppress people. Therefore, even while we truly celebrate our precious independence, many people are still confined to the perils of new forms of exploitation which is immensely unfortunate. Victims of human trafficking are those unfortunate people who are caught up in the vicious web of myriad forms of enslavement wherein their only hope is to free themselves from the clutches of ruthless pimps who oppress them in every way on a daily basis. Freedom for them means leading a dignified life wherein they can live on their own terms and taste the precious independence of a free country.
The 15th of August is a truly auspicious day for the people of India as it brings together all of our fellow citizens to commemorate our long-cherished independence from atrocious colonial rule and to celebrate our freedom fighters who gave their sweat and blood for future generations to live in freedom. They set forth a legacy of questioning, challenging, and fighting injustices that suppress people and a legacy to follow the path of love and kindness for all our fellow beings, and many of us continue to do so.
“On 14th August 2022, Harmony Foundation joined these rescued victims of trafficking in rejoicing their freedom and celebrating ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. The Harmony Foundation continues to follow the legacy of our forefathers who stressed the importance of fighting any kind of oppression and continues to fight the heinous and despicable crime of human trafficking in the nation,” Dr Abraham Mathai, founder and chairman of the foundation said.
Furthermore, its aim is to rehabilitate these women back into society by providing them, through our NGO partner, with various means to revive their lost dreams. Currently, Harmony Foundation is aiming to empower them by conducting an assessment of their aptitude, aspirations, educational background, and motivation level and accordingly engaging them in different skill training programs.
