Minnie Mouse from Disney is taking the phrase “new year, new me” to a whole new level. Minnie Mouse, one of the world’s most popular animated characters, is getting a makeover in a historic move. She will embrace a pantsuit after being clad in her trademark red frock for nearly a century.

In March, she’ll debut a full pantsuit outfit to mark two major world events. It is International Women’s Day and Disneyland Paris’ 30th anniversary. We do, however, have a good notion of what the new outfit will look like.

Stella McCartney was chosen to design the look because of her “legacy of female leadership” and her devotion to sustainability, according to a statement.

“Minnie has always had a special place in my heart. We share the same values,” McCartney said in the statement. “What I love about Minnie is the fact that she embodies happiness, self-expression, authenticity and that she inspires people of all ages around the world.”

Minnie Mouse’s new outfit

Minnie Mouse will wear a dark blue tuxedo with black polka dots according to a statement released by Disneyland Paris on Tuesday. Minnie’s characteristic bow will remain in a new style and will be in the same color palette as before.

The outfit is a handmade blue tuxedo with black polka dots and matching ribbon, manufactured with “responsibly sourced fabrics,” according to the designer.

For the anniversary, Minnie isn’t the only one receiving a new look. In the celebration’s promotional film, Mickey Mouse dons a purple blazer with a reflective shirt and hat as he walks to meet other Disney characters such as Daffy Duck.

Pantsuits are becoming a sign of expression for women all over the world. More and more female international leaders revamp their wardrobes and include pantsuits as part of their power attire. Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and US Vice President Kamala Harris all have a fair share of pantsuits that they dress up in.

The collaboration with Stella McCartney will also include a limited T-shirt collection. It will be depicting Minnie with the words “Divine Feminine” for International Women’s Day. It will be shown on the ramp during the Stella McCartney Winter 2022 show on March 7. The following day, it will be available for purchase.

Criticism

Meanwhile, the transformation has prompted criticism, with many people wondering why Minnie has been given a ‘woke’ new look. One Twitter user wrote, “Way to go, Disney, you turned Minnie Mouse into Hillary Clinton”. Another added, “People: “Hey Disney, you should actually give gay/queer characters storylines and also maybe pay your employees a livable wage.” ‘ Disney: “Minnie Mouse wears a pantsuit now.’”

“I was never a Disney mascot fan but WTF?’ someone else said. “A covert Hillary homage or just woke pandering run amok. What’s next, will she transition into a Michael so Mickey can fully express himself?”
