Former Mumbai police chief Parambir Singh was granted protection from arrest by the Supreme Court as he submitted in court via his lawyer that he hasn’t fled the country and is very much in India.

The top court asked him to join the investigations into the extortion charges against him while directing the police not to arrest him.

Supreme Court had refused to grant Singh any such protection last week till he informed them about his whereabouts.

His lawyer told the court that Parambir Singh had no intentions to abscond but he faces threat to his life. The lawyer argued that the former cop is being hounded and faces threat from the Mumbai police the moment he lands in Maharashtra.

The court questioned how a former police chief could feel threatened by a force he led.
