Delhi: Nitin Gadkari, a union minister, told a story about his time as a student, when he used to participate in political campaigns in jeeps, at the Agenda Aaj Tak event on Friday. He said that India’s automobile industry has developed very well.

“Mein bolta tha Iodex ki bottle le kar chalo, itne dhakke lagte the (I used to say, we should have a bottle of Iodex with us, there will be many bumps [on the road]),” stated Gadkari with the idea of pointing out the then objective of the automobile industry which was being cost-centric. As opposed to now when the Indian automobile sector has elevated to quality-centric manufacturing.

Additionally, he said that the automobile industry in India today is so much in demand that people are queuing for about a year to get Indian-made electric vehicles.

Alongside, Gadkari also stated that he intends to raise India to the pedestal of the World’s No 1 manufacturing hub.

Nitin Gadkari also welcomed Tesla CEO Elon Musk for manufacturing in India. He said,  “Elon Musk is welcome in India. However, it won’t be possible if he is only manufacturing in China and wants a concession for marketing in India.”

“If he manufactures in any Indian state only then he can avail the concession and benefits,” the minister added.

Nitin Gadkari said that automobile industry pays the most GST. He said, “This industry is the only industry that pays the maximum amount of GST to state government and the Centre. The Indian automobile industry has given employment to 4 crore people.”
