Men who have been detained may have connections to the Popular Front of India, but Alok Kumar, ADGP, says that they are still being investigated.

Bengaluru: In connection with the murder of BJP youth wing leader Praveen Nettaru on July 26 in Bellare, Karnataka’s Dakshin Kannada district, two local guys have been detained. The two guys, who have been identified as Zakir and Shafiq, have “suspected affiliations” to the Popular Front of India.”But we are investigating those links and also their motives,” said Alok Kumar, ADGP, law and order.

Both had been taken into custody for questioning yesterday, and were arrested today “on the basis of evidence”, police said. More arrests could be made after interrogating them, said the ADGP.

After closing his chicken shop in Bellare, 32-year-old district secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha Praveen Nettaru was travelling back to his house in the nearby town of Sullia when he was attacked by three guys on a motorcycle and brandishing a machete.

Particularly heated demonstrations took place in Bellare and Sullia, where the Vishwa Hindu Parishad called for a bandh. When his body was brought to his home, hundreds more people joined in. The Popular Front of India and the Social Democratic Party of India are allegedly responsible for the assassination, according to several right-wing organisations.
