Kevin Spacey to pay $31m to the studio after abuse claims

Following sexual harassment charges against the US actor, a mediator has ordered Kevin Spacey to pay roughly $31 million (£23.2 million) to the studio that produced the hit Netflix programme House of Cards for breach of contract.

The secret judgement was issued last year. But the public announcement happened on Monday after MRC’s lawyers filed a court petition to confirm the award. Since 2017, the actor is on the list of many sexual assaults. He has categorically denied any misconduct. Spacey, 62, was cut from his main role as a scheming politician in House of Cards. As a result, he is keeping a low profile after allegations of creating a “toxic” work atmosphere on set. By allegedly making vulgar comments and caressing young staffers without their consent.

In the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein incident and as the #MeToo movement gained traction. He is one of the first major Hollywood celebrities to openly face accusations of misconduct. Spacey was sacked from House of Cards by MRC and Netflix. Therefore his character was out of the show. As a result, the studio claims to lose millions of dollars. Because it had already begun work on the next season, according to arbitration filings obtained by US media.

Lawyers on both sides heard from more than 20 people in an eight-day confidential arbitration hearing in February 2020, Variety reports. It adds that the 46-page ruling made five months later remains confidential. However, MRC’s appeal to the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday reveals the judgement was in the studio’s favour. Mr Spacey and his production businesses, M Profitt Productions and Trigger Street Productions. The court orders them to pay damages, attorneys’ fees, and court expenses. He filed an appeal against the ruling. The refusal of the appeal came this month. Mr Spacey’s lawyer declines to speak to the press in the United States.

In the statement, Mr Spacey reveals he will now live as a gay man. He was chastised for equating his apology for alleged predatory behaviour with his sexual orientation. As a result of the claims, he lost several acting roles. But he returns to the stage this year. With a modest role in a low-budget, independent Italian film produced by Franco Nero.
