A 24-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, who had accused BSP MP Atul Rai of rape in 2019, has died in a Delhi hospital.

The woman and her male friend had set themselves afire in front of the Supreme Court last week. The woman’s friend had died of burn injuries on Saturday.

The woman had suffered 85 per cent burns in the incident on August 16. The man, 27, had suffered 65 per cent burns and succumbed to injuries on Saturday. Both were admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, police said.

She had alleged that the police in Varanasi, where she had filed a case, were colluding with the jailed Member of Parliament and his relatives.

In May 2019, the woman had filed a case against Rai, who is MP from eastern UP’s Ghosi, alleging that he had raped her at his residence in Varanasi. He surrendered a month later and has been in jail since.

The MP’s brother last year reportedly filed a case of forgery against the woman and police had issued warrant against her.

The woman and her friend on August 16 did a Facebook live from outside the Supreme Court before setting themselves on fire. The two said they expected no justice.
