Will the welcome of Ganpati also ring in the third wave for the financial capital, that is the worry plaguing Mumbai that is continuing to record 400+ fresh covid infections daily. The Mayor of the city thinks that question is redundant as she told reporters that the third wave of Covid-19 is not coming it is already at our doorstep.
The data from the BMC shows that Mumbai already reported 2,570 Covid-19 infections in the first six days of September. This is nearly 29% of the total 9,147 cases recorded in the entire month of August. At this pace Mumbai will record over 12,000+ fresh infections in the month of September. The number of deaths is also on the rise, the city reported 21 fatalities in the first 6 days of September.
The rise in cases comes at a time that the city is preparing for it’s biggest festival, the homecoming of Ganpati for 11 days. This has the civic body and the state govt up in arms to ensure covid protocols are followed and the infection spread does not have a déjà vu of the early April when the second waved swept the state.
But even as Chief Minister Thackeray asked people to stay home and avoid excessive festivities, he remained silent on any possible curbs for the city.
