Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra once again displayed his midas touch with javelin as he bagged the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Chopra, in his fourth attempt, registered a best throw of 88.13m. With best throw of 90.54m, Grenada’s Anderson Peters won the gold medal. Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic won bronze with a best throw of 88.09m, whereas Germany’s Julian Weber came fourth with a best attempt of 86.86m
With this silver medal, Neeraj Chopra became only the second Indian — and first Indian man — to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. Anju Bobby had earlier won a bronze medal in 2003 for long jump.
Starting with a foul in his first throw, Chopra recovered in second attempt and registered 82.39m. He then went on to throw 86.37m in his third attempt. However, he was still not in for a medal. But the Indian athlete, who won gold in Tokyo Olympics, Â registered a throw of 88.13m with his fourth attempt to shoot up to second place from fourth. Chopra’s fifth and sixth attempts were fouls as well.

Chopra had topped the Group A qualification round with 88.39m of third career-best throw, while Peters came top in Group B with an effort of 89.91m.
