Apple’s iPhone 14 pro series is still a long way off. But rumors about it have been circulating for at least a year. So far, we’ve heard a lot of them. Nearly all of them have hinted that on the iPhone 14 Pro variants, Apple will ditch the notch in favor of a punch-hole. However, a recent source says that the new iPhone would include a round punch-hole and a pill-shaped cutout on the display. It sure is a surprise change.
Ross Young, an analyst with Display Supply Chain Consultants and a reliable source for all things Apple, provided the information. He claims that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have two display styles that are similar but different. There will be a punch-hole – a single, circular hole as we know it. Also, a pill-shaped cutout, as seen on phones like the Galaxy S10+. And, given Young’s track record, there’s reason to believe this rumor.
According to Young, the “hole+pill” design would be exclusive to the next iPhone 14 Pro models, the same way the notch was until Android manufacturers copied it. But, contrary to what Young claims, punch-holes and pill cuts are not a new design. Both of them are a feature on a variety of Android phones. The only catch is that neither design has ever been seen or utilized in conjunction with the other. So perhaps that is what Young is referring to when he says “uniqueness.”
And, surprisingly enough, this design, which combines a punch-hole and a pill-shaped cutout, isn’t making news for the first time. The schematic for this design was released on Twitter by an unknown account in September of last year. Young’s latest announcement regarding the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max just adds to that.
According to the schematic, the punch-hole on the right will house a camera. The pill-shaped cutout on the left will house the Face ID technology. This is especially intriguing because prior rumors suggested that the Face ID technology would conceal beneath the display. The FaceTime camera is hidden inside the punch-hole. It sounded a little too far-fetched for Apple. But it was still an interesting premise, and we would have loved to see Apple use it. But we reckon Apple has other ideas.
