The Congress is likely to announce the new Punjab Chief Minister later today. Reports said that another meeting of the Punjab MLAs has been called today, a day after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as CM in the face of a massive revolt against him by the MLAs.
The MLAs on Saturday authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to pick a new chief minister.
The probable names doing the rounds to replace Singh are – former Punjab Congress chiefs Sunil Jakhar and Pratap Singh Bajwa, and MP Ravneet Singh Bittu.
Over 50 MLAs had reportedly written to Sonia Gandhi seeking Captain’s ouster as CM. The veteran Congress leader after his resignation on Saturday had said that he was “humiliated” and added that his options for future course were open.
Navjot Singh Sidhu versus Captain Amarinder Singh rivalry had plagued the Congress for long. The party tried to paper overt the differences by appointing Sidhu as state party chief, but the uneasy truce didn’t last long.
