Streaming guide to Oscar-winning movies
CODA
Three Oscars were awarded to this remake of the French film La Famille Bélier. Ruby Rossi, a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) who is the only hearing member of her family, is played by Emilia Jones. Ruby must choose between her responsibilities to her family and her goals when she finds her ability for singing. It was an underdog winner for best film, as well as the best-adapted script. However, Troy Kotsur’s dedication to his best-supporting actor award to the deaf community was particularly emotional. CODA is exclusively available on Apple TV.
Dune
The cinematography, visual effects, sound, original soundtrack, film editing, and production design honors went to the epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic. Paul Atreides is played by Timothée Chalamet, who is most known for his role in Call Me By Your Name. In addition, Zendaya, Jason Mamoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, etc are part of the film. While it isn’t accessible on a streaming service, you may rent a digital copy on Apple TV, YouTube, Amazon, or Microsoft’s websites.
The Power of the Dog
The film received 12 nominations in all, including Best Director Jane Campion and Best Actor (Male) Benedict Cumberbatch. In this Western psychological thriller, the Sherlock actor plays a harsh and spiteful Montana rancher who meets his match in his brother’s wife and son. Jane Campion made history as the first woman to be nominated twice for best director and the only woman to win the prize. It’s yet another watershed moment for diversity at the Oscars, even though it was the lone successful nomination out of a total of 12. The movie is available to stream on Netflix.
West Side Story
The remake of Steven Spielberg’s famous 1961 classic of the same name received acclaim from critics. There were seven nominations for the film, including Best Director for Spielberg. Ariana Debose took home the title of best-supporting actress for her portrayal of Anita. Steven Spielberg’s big-budget version of the stage musical won the night’s only Oscar. You can watch online Spielberg’s version on Disney+ or Foxtel Now, or rent it digitally from AppleTV, Amazon, or Microsoft.
Belfast
Kenneth Branagh won the award for best script for its charming story set during the Troubles. The film had the best film, director, supporting actor, supporting actress, sound, and original song nominations and it is worth seeing. At the present, Branagh’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story is exclusively available in theatres.
King Richard
King Richard is still playing in the limited theatre. However, it is yet to be available on streaming services. However, renting it (or buying it) online costs around $30, which is much more than some of the other digital rentals available.
