Pak boat with 9 crew members apprehended near Gujarat coast heroin worth Rs 280 cr seized
Ahmedabad Apr 25 PTI The Indian Coast Guard and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad ATS have apprehended a Pakistani boat with nine crew members on board in the Arabian Sea near the state coast and seized heroin worth Rs 280 crore from the vessel a defence spokesperson said on Monday A top police officer said that the Coast Guard had to fire some shots at the Pakistani boat as it tried to escape after being challenged by the interceptor ship Two to three crew members received minor injuries The Coast Guard ship intercepted and apprehended the Pakistani boat Al Haj early Monday morning from the Indian waters the defence spokesperson said in a statement Officials found heroin worth Rs 280 crore on the boat the statement said adding that the boat and the crew members were brought to the Jakhau port in Gujarats Kutch district for further investigation Gujarat Director General of Police DGP Ashish Bhatia said the seizure took place on the Indian side of the Arabian sea during the early hours nearly 15 nautical miles away from the International Maritime Boundary Line IMBL He said the Coast Guard had to fire some shots at the Pakistani boat as the crew tried to escape after being challenged by the interceptor ship Based on a tip-off given by the ATS a Coast Guard ship headed towards IMBL and spotted the Pakistani boat sailing inside the Indian waters after crossing the IMBL Since the Pak crew tried to speed away with their boat after being challenged the Coast Guard fired some rounds on them during a chase Two to three crew members received minor injuries due to the firing Bhatia said at the ATS headquarters here He said officials of ATS and Coast Guard found 56 kg of heroin worth Rs 280 crore on the boat While we are yet to find out the source as well as the destination of the contraband we learnt that Karachi-based smuggler Mustafa is behind this racket The contraband was supposed to be transported to a northern state had the landing been successful Bhatia added PTI PJT PD GK NSK NSK
