Oslo: Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday at 11 AM local time, in Oslo, Norway. The prize was established by Swedish chemist (and inventor of dynamite) Alfred Nobel in 1895. The prize is considered the most expansive in its recognition, The award is given to people who gave humanity the biggest advantage. This year on the nomination list are Volodymyr Zelenskyy for handling Ukraine Crisis, Pratik Sinha, and Mohammed Zubair for their quality journalism are on the list for their noble works.

The bookmakers had Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine and a member of the TIME 100 for 2022, as the favorite to win the peace prize. Zelenskyy remained steadfast in Kyiv during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24. He made a brief recording that said, “We are here… Here we are in Kyiv. Ukraine is being guarded by us.”

Since Russian Invasion started, Zelenskyy stood firm against Russian actions on the global stage. He also urged international allies to confront and punish Kremlin for it’s aggressive actions.

Next on the list is the UN Refugee Agency. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was always available to help out Ukraine and Afghanistan, providing cash assistance and relief items to those in need during crisis time.

According to the U.N., the war in Ukraine has resulted in more than 7.2 million Ukrainian refugees travelling around Europe since February 24 and more than 6.9 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced. It amounts to the biggest refugee catastrophe Europe has experienced since the Second World War.

Next on the list is WHO. The World Health Organization was on the forefront to respond and handle the COVID situation. During the pandemic for providing money, vaccines, and equipment to help contain the disease around the world, it has been praised by the world. The WHO-backed COVAX program, which focuses on poorer countries, has so far delivered more than 1.7 billion vaccines to 146 countries.

Next person is known for fighting for Democratic Reforms. Russia’s jailed opposition leader and anti-corruption activist Alexey Navalny has been a key figure, who fought for democratic reforms. Navalny founded the Anti-Wrongdoing Foundation in 2011 to look into possible corruption among prominent Russian politicians. He has been working to hold Putin’s government and the oligarchs who support it accountable for years. His work has costs him personal safety and freedom. He was poisoned by a nerve toxin during an attempted murder in 2020, but he managed to survive. He briefly resided in Germany during his recovery, but he returned to Russia despite the threat to his life.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunburg, TIME’s 2019 Person of the Year, has kept the pressure on global powers to do more to combat the climate crisis. Thunberg has long been vocal about a “lack of action” on climate change. In 2021, she termed COP26 climate summit as a “failure.” She said that it did not do enough to drastically cut CO2 emissions. More recently, she took aim at Swedish politicians. Taking a swipe at them she said that they ignored the climate crisis ahead of September’s national elections.

The co-founders of the Indian fact-checking website AltNews, journalists Pratik Sinha and Mohammed Zubair, are also n the nomination list because they have been tenaciously combating misinformation in India, where the Hindu nationalist BJP party has frequently been accused of inciting prejudice against Muslims. Sinha and Zubair have called out hate speech and methodically disproved myths and false information spreading on social media.

Zubair was arrested by the Indian authorities for a meme he tweeted four years ago. The detention was denounced by journalists all around the world, who said it was punishment for his fact-checking work.“It is apparent that AltNews’ alert vigilance was resented by those who use disinformation as a tool to polarize the society and rake nationalist sentiments,” said a June 28 statement from the Editors Guild of India. The Committee to Protect Journalists also called for Zubair’s release. The committee said that his arrest as “another low for press freedom in India, where the government has created a hostile and unsafe environment for members of the press reporting on sectarian issues.”
