Massive protest in Sri Lanka as Ranil Wickremesinghe takes oath as the new president.

Mumbai:  On Thursday, July 21, Ranil Wickremesinghe took oath as the new president of Sri Lanka, even though the anti-government protesters continued their protest against him outside the residence of the president, sloganeering ‘Go back Ranil’, reported the news agency PTI. Ranil said, “I am not a friend of the Rajapaksa, I am a friend of the people.”

Becoming the ninth president of Sri Lanka, Ranil turned to the Speaker and seeked permission to take the oath outside the Parliament Hall inside the Parliament Complex. He assured the opposition that he would work with all parties to help Sri Lanka emerge from the unprecedented economic crisis.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is deeply unpopular with the masses, who have been hit with severe shortages of fuel, food, and other basic necessities after their currency reserves ran out. So much so that he is often ridiculed by the public as Ranil Rajapaksa because, as the leader of the Rajapaksa empire and as a five-time prime minister and multiple finance minister, he is also viewed by the public as a major contributor to this economic mess in Sri Lanka.

The disappointed protesters said, “We will continue the protest until Ranil goes home. It might take us a week, a month, two months, or 98 days. But we know people in Sri Lanka are not going to stand for it. We will get back on the streets and continue.”
