Republicans regained control of the US House, but by a much smaller margin than they had anticipated, which was a big letdown for a party that had been hoping for weeks for a decisive win that would set the stage for the 2024 presidential election.
The party won the 218 seats necessary to take control of the chamber more than a week after election day, according to a Wednesday night report from the Associated Press.
Voters divided on who was to blame and how much importance to place on other issues, such as abortion rights and threats to democracy, in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, despite worries about President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy and the likelihood that the nation will enter a recession.
Even so, the slim majority gives the GOP control over House investigative committees with the ability to subpoena witnesses and conduct investigations into Biden’s cabinet, his relatives, and Silicon Valley companies that conservatives have claimed are biased against them.
Republicans have also pledged to reduce government spending, increase the production of fossil fuels, and keep the wealthy’s tax breaks from the Trump administration. However, a large portion of that agenda will be abandoned in the Democratic-controlled Senate to wither.
After John Fetterman took over the Republican-held seat in Pennsylvania and Mark Kelly and Catherine Cortez Masto were named the winners in Arizona and Nevada in the days following the election, the Senate remained in Democratic hands.
A runoff election on December 6 will determine the winner of the Georgia Senate race between incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker.
Many of Biden’s remaining goals will be stalled by the GOP’s control of the House. However, this advantage is among the smallest gains made in a midterm election by either party in modern times.
