Rian Kumar: Six-year-old pedals for 100 kilometers non-stop, set world cycling record

Rian Kumar, a six-year-old from India, has established a world cycling record by pedaling 100 kilometers nonstop in record time.

Rian Kumar, who is a Chennai resident has likewise been recognized by the World Book of Records as the “fastest and youngest to perform non-stop distance cycling of 108.09 km in 5 hours, 17 minutes, and 6 seconds.”

Rian’s parents are Indian Navy officers. The family had lately relocated from Delhi to Chennai.

Rian Kumar told NDTV, “The thing I like most about cycling is speed. I practice cycling three days a week and static cycling and strength training on other days.”

The young boy also wants to take part in the 200-kilometer Brevets de Randonneurs race (BRM). He went on to say that competing in the Tour De France, France’s annual bicycle event is his goal.

“I follow Tadej Pogacar, Julian Alaphilippe, and Mark Cavendish,” Rian said when asked about his cycling heroes.

“I happened to meet this six-year-old young champion on one of the rides during the early hours,” said OV Venkataragavan, a Super Randonneur (a coveted term for a skilled cyclist who completed 200, 300, 400, and 600 km unsupported endurance events held by Audax India).

He added, “He was chasing me to say ‘hi’ and introduced himself. He said, “I am Rian, the lion, and follow me on my Strava. I was awestruck seeing his commitment and confidence. I have become his fan now.”

Jim Sathya, a famous music producer, songwriter, and cyclist, also appreciated Rian’s potential. He said, “Rian, the Lion, stands for passion and dedication towards cycling which you will find only among professionals cycling 100 km every weekend.”  

Rian wishes to ride his cycle with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, who also rides his bike on the same stretch.

Also, Rian’s message to all: “Practice. If you practice and work hard, you can do whatever you like.”
