Rupee settles 4 paise higher at 7348 against US dollar

Mumbai Sep 17 PTI The rupee closed 4 paise higher at 7348 against the US dollar on Friday tracking a broad weakness in the American currency overseas At the interbank forex market the local unit opened flat at 7349 against the greenback During the session the domestic unit witnessed an intra-day high of 7342 and a low of 7355 On a weekly basis the rupee gained 2 paise against the American currency Meanwhile the dollar index which gauges the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies fell 012 per cent to 9282 The Indian rupee ended flat against the US dollar this week as persistent dollar demand from importers offset the impact of strong local equities said Sriram Iyer Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities Throughout the week the markets witnessed dollar buying by oil companies and importers but at the same time we also witnessed corporate inflows and exporter covering which kept the rupee in a 50-paisa trading range Iyer said Brent crude futures the global oil benchmark fell 062 per cent to USD 7520 per barrel On the domestic equity market front the BSE Sensex ended 12527 points or 021 per cent lower at 5901589 while the broader NSE Nifty declined 4435 points or 025 per cent to finish at 1758515 Foreign institutional investors FIIs were net buyers in the capital market on Thursday as they purchased shares worth Rs 162188 crore as per exchange data PTI DRR MKJ MKJ
