Scientists warn of climate catastrophe due to 'unprecedented' heatwaves at Earth's poles

Heatwaves at both poles of the earth are alarming climate experts. They believe such “unprecedented” events could spark a faster and more severe climatic breakdown than previously imagined.

Temperatures in some sections of Antarctica reached 40 degrees Celsius above usual which prompted the warnings. Also, temperatures at the north pole reached 30 degrees Celsius above normal. Thereby, hitting levels are generally seen later in the year, according to The Guardian.

The UK-based publication says the rapid rise in temperatures at the poles demonstrates that human lifestyles have disturbed Earth’s climate

In the meantime, scientists have described the events as “historic” and “dramatic.”

Michael Mann is director of the Earth System Science Centre at Pennsylvania State University. He told the newspaper: “The models have done a good job projecting the overall warming, but we’ve argued that extreme events are exceeding model projections. These events drive home the urgency of action.”

Mark Maslin is an earth system science professor at University College London. He said he and his colleagues were in shock by the number and severity of extreme weather events occurring last year.

“Now we have record temperatures in the Arctic which, for me, show we have entered a new extreme phase of climate change much earlier than we had expected,” he added.

Last year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a warning that extraordinary warming signals are already present. Thus, resulting in some effects – such as polar melt – that could become irreversible very quickly.

Following a series of alarming heatwaves in 2021, most notably in the US Pacific north-west, where previous records were obliterated by several degrees as temperatures rose close to 50C, the latest abnormal weather patterns have emerged.
