Mumbai: Ranil Wickremesinghe, the acting President of Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency in the nation as per the government notice that was released late on Sunday. The emergency has been declared under Article 40(1)(C) of the Constitution, by virtue of the authority he has under Section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance (Chapter 40), as amended by Act No. 8 of 1959, Law No. 6 of 1978 and Act No. 28 of 1988.
On Saturday, Sri Lanka’s parliament convened to begin the process of electing a new president, and a shipment of fuel arrived to help the country in its time of need. Nominations for the presidential candidates will be held on Tuesday and the new President of Sri Lanka will be elected on July 20.

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned on Friday after fleeing the country to Singapore via the Maldives, amid a severe crisis in the island country. The acting President Wickremesinghe, an ally of Mr. Rajapaksa, is one of the top contenders to take on the presidency full-time but protesters also want him gone, leading to the prospect of further unrest should he be elected.
The administration aims to address the economic crisis and social discontent in the island nation.
