Suicide Squad comics reveal how dead movie characters can resurrect

The ultimate solution to how dead movie characters resurrect in the Suicide Squad movie is out in the Suicide Squad comic. Both Suicide Squad films had a high body count. In Suicide Squad #7, out today in print and digital, the comic book counterparts of the films travel to Hell—and readers find the perfect means to bring the dead back.

Suicide Squad, also known as Task force X, is a government task force. It is led by the iron-willed Amanda Waller. It consists of some of the deadliest criminals in the DC Universe. In exchange for their freedom, the Suicide Squad takes on dangerous missions. Knowing that she is in command of villains who could flee at any moment, Waller implants a little bomb in the members’ heads that she can detonate if they stray. The crew has a high casualty rate due to these devices and the extremely perilous nature of its missions. This was reflected in both the 2016 film Suicide Squad and the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. Several significant characters were slain in both films, notably Captain Boomerang and squad leader Rick Flag in the latter. While Boomerang, Flag, and the rest of the Suicide Squad will most likely never appear in another film, Suicide Squad #7 has suggested one manner in which they might. Robbie Thompson wrote the issue, which features Eduardo Pansica’s art, Julio Ferreira’s inks, and Marcelo Maiolo’s colors.

Suicide Squad vs. Suicide Squad

The crew has returned from Earth-3 and is getting ready for the next mission. Before teleporting them to Hell, Waller comes to them as a hologram. She tells them they are truly heading to Hell to recover the Rock of Eternity. The gang fights its way through Hell’s hordes only to be faced by the ‘Hell Squad’. It is a group full of former Suicide Squad members; killed in the line of duty and have vowed to avenge Amanda Waller.

It’s fair to say the Suicide Squad has an ax to grind because so many of their members die in a fight, with many of them having the bombs in their heads detonated. These former members of the Squad have reunited in Hell to exact vengeance on Amanda Waller. If a future director decided to reintroduce Captain Boomerang or Rick Flag to the DCEU, the Hell Squad may be the perfect vehicle. It would provide a way for dead movie characters to resurrect. But it would also build up a confrontation akin to the one shown here, effectively Suicide Squad vs. Suicide Squad, which would make for a fantastic film.

The Suicide Squad – both the comic and cinematic versions – has a high turnover rate, making it tough to reuse characters. But DC has suddenly supplied the perfect justification to bring back members from the past.
