Guj 4 lakh people in Ahmedabad city yet to take second dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Ahmedabad Nov 23 PTI At least 4 lakh residents of Gujarats Ahmedabad city have not taken the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine despite being eligible for the same a civic official said on Tuesday To ensure 100 per cent vaccination the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation AMC has launched a door-to-door survey to trace people who have not taken both doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 the AMCs medical officer of health Dr Bhavin Solanki said We have formed 150 teams to conduct a door-to-door survey to trace people who have not taken the vaccine against COVID-19 despite being eligible for it Till now our health teams have surveyed 30000 households and identified 3000 persons who have not taken both doses Solanki said The door-to-door exercise is in addition to the computerised data already available with the AMCs health department to identify fully and partially vaccinated residents of the city he said The data also provides information about people who have taken vaccines at private facilities he added Our data suggests that nearly 4 lakh people in the city have not taken the second dose despite being eligible for it During the survey our teams have made a separate entry about such people and are making necessary arrangements to get them fully vaccinated the official said As per an official release the AMC has administered 7706 lakh doses so far including 4739 lakh first and 2966 lakh second jabs During the ongoing drive 4264 persons were given the first dose while 19027 took the second jab on Monday at both government and private facilities in the city the release stated PTI PJT ARU ARU

Ahmedabad Oct 27 PTI Mahatma Gandhis great-grandson Tushar Gandhi has filed a public interest litigation PIL in the Gujarat High Court challenging the state governments Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment projectThe PIL filed recently is likely to come up for hearing post-Diwali vacationThe government proposes to redevelop the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad a place closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Indias freedom struggle as a world-class tourist attraction spread over 54 acres of land by bringing together 48 existing heritage properties located nearbyOn Wednesday Tushar Gandhi the son of Arun Gandhi whose father Mani Lal was the Mahatmas third son said in the PIL he has challenged the governments Rs 1200-crore Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development Project because it goes against the wishes and philosophy of the Father of the NationHe said the Gujarat government has been made a respondent in the PIL along with all the six trusts that take care of various activities of the Sabarmati Ashram as well as the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi -- a charitable trust formed to further activities associated with Mahatma Gandhi -- and also the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation AMC and others associated with the projectWe have raised questions before these trusts as to why they are not fulfilling their responsibility said Tushar Gandhi a writer and social workerThe state should not be allowed to interfere as the constitution of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi says Bapus Ashram and memorials should be kept away from government and political influences he saidWhen the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi was formed not a single penny was taken from the government during its initial years Later amendments were made to allow for funds from the government to take care of Gandhi monuments but the role of the state was limited to be that of a funding agency with no right to carry out anything on its own Tushar Gandhi saidThis is the first time that the government has asked the trusts to step back and let it do all the work The government has even formed its own trust for the same We believe the trust formed by the government will become whole and sole for Sabarmati and other trusts will be made redundant he saidHe said the petition also raises the issue of spending an amount of Rs 1200 crore as not being justified in the present circumstancesThe project envisages developing the Ashram the way it existed during the time of Mahatma Gandhi when it was spread over 35 to 40 acres with 63 heritage properties 48 of which are still standingThe sprawling premises also called the Gandhi Ashram served as Mahatma Gandhis residence for several years from where he carried out major political and social activities during the independence movement PTI KA PD RSY RSY

Ahmedabad Oct 27 PTI The Gujarat High Court has said it is very disturbing to note that the laboratories of sewage treatment plants STPs established to clean polluted water before it is released in the Sabarmati river here indulged in manipulation of records and asked the local civic body to look into the issueThe manipulation of records was revealed in a report submitted by a committee formed by the court to look into pollution in the river while hearing a suo motu PILA division bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Vaibhavi Nanavati in an order made available online on Wednesday directed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation AMC to ensure scientific operation of all the STPs and explore in situ on site treatment of the drains carrying sewage into the Sabarmati riverIt is very disturbing to note that the laboratories of the STPs run and managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation were found indulging in manipulation of the records the bench said in the order delivered on October 21The court is hearing a suo motu PIL based on media reports of polluted water dumped into the Sabarmati river without being treated properly in accordance with set normsThe HC said as per the report submitted to it by the committee the laboratories staff were ill-trained and their data indicated repetitionThe committee in so many words has stated in its report that the in-house operating and monitoring mechanism of the STP plants and their laboratories is insubstantial said the courtThe bench directed the AMC to immediately look into the affairs of the laboratories as they appear to be not functioning in the manner as the law expects such facilities to operateIn fact it is the duty of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board to keep a close watch on such laboratories If there are inefficient or unqualified people or technicians in the laboratories then the contract should be immediately terminated in accordance with law and fresh appointments shall be made of qualified and efficient staff it statedThe court further directed the AMC to undertake regular exercise of verification of data as well as identify all unauthorised industrial wastewater connectionsThe HC asked the Chief Secretary to keep a close watch on the PIL and extend full cooperation and remain in constant touch with the Ahmedabad municipal commissioner with a view to make a sincere attempt to bring around some better and positive results to pollution in the Sabarmati River PTI KA PD RSY RSY
