Mumbai court rejects Kanganas plea to transfer extortion case against Javed Akhtar from magistrate court

Mumbai Dec 18 PTI A court of the chief metropolitan magistrate CMM here on Saturday rejected Bollywood actor Kangana Ranauts plea seeking transfer of her extortion complaint against veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar out of the magistrates court in suburban Andheri Ranaut had filed a counter complaint against Akhtar who is pursuing a criminal defamation case against her In her complaint before the magistrate court Ranaut had accused Akhtar of extortion and criminal intimidation The actor through her lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee had approached the CMM for transferring this case saying she lost faith in the magistrate court In her petition Ranaut had claimed that the court of the metropolitan magistrate had indirectly threatened her of issuing a warrant if she failed to appear before it in a bailable offence In October the CMM court had rejected her plea seeking transfer of the defamation case filed by Akhtar against her to another court The court had held that the Andheri metropolitan magistrate hearing the defamation case against Ranaut acted judiciously and hasnt shown any bias against the actor Akhtar 76 had filed a complaint in the Andheri court in November last year claiming that Ranaut had made defamatory statements against him in a television interview which allegedly damaged his reputation PTI AVI NSK NSK

Mumbai Sep 20 PTI Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut appeared before a Mumbai court on Monday in connection with a criminal defamation complaint filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar The court had last week said it will issue a warrant against Ranaut if she fails to appear on the next date of hearing on September 20 Ranaut appeared before the metropolitan magistrates court on Monday for the first time since summons was issued to her in February this year Earlier this month the Bombay High Court dismissed a plea filed by Ranaut seeking quashing of proceedings initiated against her by the local court on the criminal defamation complaint filed by Akhtar Justice Revati Mohite-Dere had said in the order that there was no procedural illegality or irregularity in the metropolitan magistrates order initiating the proceedings Akhtar 76 had filed the complaint in the court in November last year claiming Ranaut had made defamatory statements against him in a television interview which allegedly damaged his reputation In his complaint Akhtar claimed that Ranaut dragged his name during an interview while referring to a coterie existing in Bollywood following the alleged suicide committed by actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June last year PTI AVI GK GK
