Kolkata Apr 19 PTI A West Bengal government-appointed special investigation team SIT on Tuesday submitted a report to the Calcutta High Court informing it of the steps taken in its probe into the alleged murder of student leader Anis KhanAdvocate General S N Mookherjee submitted the 82-page report on the progress of the investigation to the court of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha as directed by him earlier It also appears to this court that the investigation is nearing conclusion Justice Mantha said While directing that a copy of the report be made available to senior counsel Bikash Bhattacharya who appeared for the petitioner Salem Khan the father of the deceased the court made it clear that confidentiality of the report must be maintained Khan had moved the high court seeking an order for an investigation into the death by an impartial agency that is not connected with the West Bengal police Hearing in the matter was adjourned by the court till April 25 on a prayer by BhattacharyaThe court had on March 14 said that it expects the investigation will be completed by April 18 when the matter will be heard again Justice Mantha had said that an extension of time to complete the probe will not be considered except for reasons beyond the control of the investigating agencySince Justice Mantha did not preside on Monday the SIT report was submitted on Tuesday At the beginning of the hearing on Tuesday taking note of certain disparaging remarks made by the petitioner which are doing the rounds on social media Justice Mantha expressed desire to release the matter from his court He was however persuaded by lawyers appearing for all the parties in the matter to continue hearing the case The court directed petitioner Khan to submit an apology for the remarks in an affidavit on the next date of hearingSalem Khan has alleged that his son was murdered by men wearing khaki and civic volunteer uniform on February 19 The SIT had arrested a home guard and a civic volunteer in connection with the death of Khan and they are in judicial custody now Justice Mantha taking up a petition by the deceaseds father along with a suo motu petition initiated by the court into the death had on February 24 said it is expected that no stone will be left unturned in the course of the investigation Alleging that Khan was murdered Bhattacharya had claimed before the court that he had been brutally assaulted by four persons of whom one was in police uniform and the other three in civic volunteer dress and thrown over from the third floor of his home at Amta in Howrah district on the night of February 19Khans family members have been demanding a CBI investigation into his deathClaiming that the killing of Anis Khan a social activist was a premeditated murder Bhattacharya had prayed before the court that an independent investigation be ordered into it The state government had formed the SIT headed by Additional director general CID Gyanwant Singh to hold the probe PTI AMR NN NN

Kolkata Feb 28 PTI Trinamool Congress students wing on Monday took out a rally in the city protesting against the alleged efforts by opposition Left and other organisations to politicise the mysterious death of student leader Anis Khan Trinamool Chhatra Parishad state President Trinankur Bhattacharya Trinamool Youth Congress leader Debangshu Bhattacharya were in the forefront of the rally in which thousands of students walked 4 km from Ramlila Maidan at Entally to Mayo Road Despite the ordering of a probe by a special investigating team in the Anis Khan death and initiatives to conduct a fast investigation by the TMC government the opposition Left and some other organisations are trying to politicise Anis unfortunate death They are trying to create lawlessness and are instigating his family and locals not to cooperate with the SIT for political reasons Trinankur Bhattacharya told reporters Debangshu Bhattacharya said The youth and student community of the state reiterate their resolve to be on West Bengal chief ministers side in every step taken by her including in the Anis Khan death probe We will foil the game plan of the vested interests who want to push Bengal backward SFI had been taking out rallies demanding high level probe but not under the supervision of the state police in the Anis Khan death case and had staged sit-ins before the police station at Amta where the student leader had died and the office of superintendent of police rural Howrah last week It had also demonstrated in the city The left students wing and CPI-M had alleged that uniformed police personnel from Amta were behind his death on February 18 midnight and demanded the arrest of the officer in-charge of Amta police station and action against the SPRural Howrah Meanwhile Uluberia Dakshin MLA and West Bengal minister Pulak Roy met the father of Anis at his Amta residence during the day Roy later told reporters Vested interests are trying to mislead the family and derail the SIT probe for political reasons But we want truth to come out We are with the family Anis family had alleged that three policemen one of them in uniform and armed had raided their residence on February 18 midnight They had gone to the incomplete third floor of the house and after a brief argument with the Aliah University alumnus there pushed him to death Two persons- a civic volunteer and a home guard attached with Amta police station - have been arrested by the SIT and their custodial interrogation is on to find the truth director general of police Manoj Malviya had said Anis septuagenarian father Salem Khan said he could not see the man in police uniform in the test identification parade but assured that he will cooperate in the SIT probe as directed by Calcutta High Court The family is demanding a Court monitored probe by CBI PTI SUS KK KK

Howrah Rural on the issue of the mysterious death of student activist Anis KhanAll India general secretary of SFI Mayukh Biswas state general secretary of the student body Srijan Bhattacharya and state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India DYFI Minakshi Mukherjee were among the agitatorsThough the activists had promised that the protest would be peaceful the group of people also comprising locals suddenly overturned two police barricades before the office of SP Howrah Rural in Panchla area after traversing a distance of one kilometre from Ranihati More a police officer said As the pelting of stones continued for some time from 430 pm the police swung into action using lathi-charge and tear gas shells to disperse the mob a police officer saidThe protesters also vandalised some parked police vehicles and tried to torch a van the officer said Mukherjee who was injured along with a few SFI and DYFI members later claimed before reporters while being taken away in prison vans that the activists were not involved in the vandalism and some outsiders might have triggered the violenceFew policemen who were also injured in the incident were treated at a health Kolkata Feb 26 PTI Activists of Left student and youth bodies Friday scuffled with the police in south Kolkata demanding high level probe into the alleged killing of social activist Anish Khan and about 100 of them were taken into preventive custody SFI state general secretary Srijan Bhattacharya was among those detained by the police during the protest at the crossing of Rasbehari Avenue and Asutosh Mukherjee Road near Kalighat metro station They were bundled into waiting police vehicles as they refused to leave the spot The police cannot find the true killers of Anis even after a week but loses no time to crush a democratic movement of students Bhattacharya said while being forced into a police vehicle He said the protestors wanted to peacefully go to the CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan after assembling at Rasbehari crossing but the police took over the area A police official said around 100 Left activists were taken to custody as they obstructed vehicular movement and refused to budge from the spot despite being repeatedly asked to do so He said the police used minimum force to disperse the activists and its women force were present in large numbers at the spot In another protest at Nonapukur area around 100 members of Congress student wing protested on A J C Bose Road demanding fair and impartial probe in the death of the Aliah University alumnus There was however no untoward incident Student bodies have been staging protests across the city since the mysterious death of the student leader at his Amta residence on February 19 midnight It was alleged that he was killed by a section of local police for his continued protests against alleged corruption by some politicians belonging to TMC and their nexus with some policemen of Amta West Bengal government formed a SIT to probe the death and two persons - a home guard and a civic volunteer - were arrested by the SIT Calcutta High Court has taken suo moto cognisance of the incident and has asked the special investigation team to submit its report to it in two weeks and for a second mortem after exhuming the body PTI SUS KK KK KK
