Thiruvananthapuram Nov 24 PTI One year of waiting and weeks long tough legal battle protests and controversies came to an end as Anupama S Chandran finally held her baby boy in her arms soon after she stepped out of a court complex here along with her partner Ajith on a rainy Wednesday afternoon She got custody of the baby whom she last saw when the infant was three days old after a family court here this afternoon ordered that the child be handed over to his biological parents The child had been under the care and protection of his adoptive parents in Andhra Pradesh till last Sunday The development comes a day after the DNA tests on the baby Anupama and Ajith at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology RGCB established the couple as the parents of the child Emerging from the court complex the family travelled by car to the site of Anupamas protest these last few days in front of the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare KSCCW headquarters here I got my child He is in the car I am very happy now I wish to spend time with my child she told reporters When the court began its proceedings at 230 pm the Child Welfare Committee CWC submitted before it the results of the DNA test During the one-and-a-half hour long proceedings held in the chamber of the judge the baby who was in the custody of CWC at the Nirmala Sishu Bhavan was produced before the court following its directive The court then directed that the baby be medically examined and after completing all legal formalities ordered the CWC to hand over the child to his mother The court had posted the matter for November 30 but it preponed the hearing to Wednesday after the government pleader appealed to hand over the baby to its parents at the earliest Anupama 22 and her partner Ajith had been protesting in front of the KSCCW office at Thycaud here for some days demanding to get their child back The womans allegation that her child was forcibly taken away from her by her father a local CPIM leader triggered a political controversy following which the government had ordered a departmental probe into the incident Anupama had accused her parents of forcibly taking away her new-born child from her soon after its birth a year ago and alleged that though she had complained about it to police several times since April but they were reluctant to register a case against her family members However the Peroorkkada police here said a case was registered against six people -- her parents sister sisters husband and two of his fathers friends -- and that the delay occurred as they were awaiting legal opinion PTI HMP TGB APR APR
Thiruvananthapuram Sep 21 PTI The growing trend of equating social evils with some sections of society needs to be nipped in the bud as doing so will only exacerbate the communal differences in society Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Tuesday apparently referring to the controversial narcotic jihad remark by a Catholic Bishop The statement by the CM came in the wake of repeated criticism by the opposition with regard to the alleged lack of any steps being taken by his administration to assuage the concerns raised by a particular section of society in reference to the Pala Bishops remarks Vijayan while speaking at the inauguration of the centenary of a historical student agitation at Travancore in 1921 said that those giving prominence to social evils or engaged in unlawful activities or acting against general public interests should not be clubbed with any particular section of society Doing so will not strengthen societal or communal unity Instead it will only serve to exacerbate the communal differences in society he said He further said that glorifying terror organisations or equating them with symbols of freedom struggles would weaken the communal harmony in society and endanger our freedom On Sree Narayana Gurus death anniversary Vijayan referred to the sages teachings to rise above and beyond caste and religion and said that people should pledge to oppose those forces which use religion and caste as weapons to divide society on communal lines Earlier in the day the CM in a Facebook post said that narrow interests should not be allowed to undermine our unity as no religion or a nation is greater than man The CMs remark came on the occasion of Sree Narayana Gurus death anniversary Hailing the contribution of Guru in transforming Kerala as a modern society he said the obstacles in the path of becoming a community as envisioned by the sage were racist ideology and the remnants of the caste system which are still strong enough to embarrass us Vijayan in his Facebook post also said that people ought to proclaim out loud that a religion and a nation are not greater than man No narrow interests can be allowed to undermine our unity let us pledge on this day that we will stand together for the common good of the country May that unity take our country to new heights he said adding that we have to go a long way to fulfil Gurus dream Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan also tweeted a message on the occasion saying My pranams to SreeNarayanaGuru on his Samadhi day Guru placed the human being at the centre of all existence and advocated self improvement by individuals as the only hope for the society and the world The CM in his post also said that the Guru gave priority to the essence of man above all else and was critical of Brahmanism and the ideas of sectarianism which are the basis of the caste-feudal system PTI HMP TGB APR APR
