Thiruvananthapuram Feb 22 PTI The opposition Congress-led UDF on Tuesday staged a walkout in the Kerala Assembly protesting over the alleged reluctance of the Left government to discuss the recent Lok Ayukta ordinance which triggered a political controversy in the state They raised the ordinance issue during zero hour and wanted the House to discuss the matter suspending all other businesses but Law Minister P Rajeev objected to their demand saying that questioning an ordinance signed by the Governor through an adjournment motion would set a wrong precedent Strongly justifying the government action bringing the ordinance to amend some of the provisions of the state Lok Ayukta Act passed 22 years ago he said none of the powers of the anti-corruption watchdog is taken away through the amendment and the Left government is the one which has always stood against corruption The Legislative Assembly has the power to amend a law if that was found to be outdated he pointed out Mocking at the government stand Sunny Joseph Congress who sought notice for the motion said they should ready to convince their coalition partner CPIs state secretary Kanam Rajendran who raised objection against the amendment first before trying to convince the opposition about the ordinance Urging the government to explain what was the emergency need that prompted them to bring out the ordinance just before the Assembly session opposition leader V D Satheesan said it was better to dissolve the constitutional body He also alleged that the government brought out the ordinance in a hasty manner as the agency was about to consider some cases against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan He also asked if the Chief Minister was afraid since cases were registered against him As Speaker M B Rajesh rejected leave for the motion based on the governments reply the opposition members registered protest and walked out of the House Despite stiff opposition raised by opposition parties Governor Arif Mohammed Khan earlier this month gave his assent to the ordinance promulgated by the Left government in the state to curb the powers of the Lok Ayukta The opposition Congress has been urging the Governor to not sign the ordinance saying the CPIM-led dispensation was trying to promulgate it at a time when complaints of several irregularities of the government were pending PTI LGK LGK SS SS

Thiruvananthapuram Feb 18 PT Kerala Assemblys budget session began on a stormy note on Monday with the opposition Congress-led UDF raising go back slogans against Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and staged a protest sit-in at the portal of the House after boycotting the proceedings As soon as the Governor entered the Assembly hall to deliver his customary policy address the opposition members started sloganeering and showed a banner and a series of placards which could be read like Government-Governor unholy nexus and that he signed the Lok Ayukta ordinance to protect Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan The Ordinance brought by the Left government had kicked up a political storm in the state recently as opposition parties raised objection against it saying it would weaken the anti-corruption watchdog When the Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan tried to say something a visibly irritated Khan said it was not the time for protest Reminding him that the leader of opposition is a responsible person he said they have an Assembly session ahead of them where they can discuss everything Ignoring the intense sloganeering he also started reading the policy document As soon as the address began the opposition members walked out the Hall continuing their slogans and launched their sit-in at the door steps outside The Assembly witnessed the dramatic scenes a day after Governor Khan refused to sign the policy document of the CPIM-led LDF government expressing strong displeasure over a letter written by it against the appointment of a senior journalist-turned politician in a key post in the Raj Bhavan The issue was resolved after the government yielding to the Governors pressure replaced K R Jyothilal as principal secretary General Administration Department GAD with a senior civil servant It was Jyothilal who had written the letter on behalf of the government to the Raj Bhavan a few days ago citing the violation of prevailing conventions in the appointment of former BJP leader Hari S Kartha as Additional Personal Assistant to the Governor PTI LGK LGK SS SS
