Guwahati Feb 19 PTI The Assam government which had announced that roads would be renamed to reflect the cultural ethos of the state withdrew its decision to name a new road after Swami Muktananda Saraswati here in the face of public outcry against it It had proposed to name a new alternate road leading to the Kamakhya temple atop Nilachal hill in the city after the monk which had led to the general people taking to the social media to express their opposition to it Most of the people claimed that the person after whom the road is being named had no connection with Assam or its people Reverting the decision state Housing and Urban Affairs Department Minister Ashok Singhal wrote on Twitter on Friday The naming of the alternate road to Kamakhya Dham through Pandu Ghat as Swami Muktananda Saraswati Path has been withdrawn with immediate effect owing to public objections We respect public opinions Singhal added A public notice issued by the Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation and published in newspapers on February 14 had said that the residents of the road have prayed for naming it as Swami Muktananda Saraswati Road It had sought objection if any from the public in this regard within 15 days of publication of the notice National award winning film critic and filmmaker Utpal Borpujari who had questioned the initial proposal appreciated the governments decision to withdraw the new name Very good decision Thank you TheAshokSinghal It will be interesting to know whose idea was it to bestow the said name and why Borpujari tweeted Chairman of Liberal Democratic Party LDP India Prodyut Bora also questioned why the government had chosen that particular name TheAshokSinghal just out of curiosity who is Swami Muktananda Saraswati I searched on Google and found several Swami Muktananda it is a common name among monks But who was the monk you were specifically referring to I think you owe this information to the public Bora posted on the microblogging platform Uttam Kumar Sharma lauded the governments move to reverse its decision One good thing about this Government is that it doesnt shy away from reversing decisions considering public mood making it a prestige issue It is necessary sometimes to take one step backward to take two steps forward he tweeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on February 16 that a portal would be launched soon to invite suggestions for change of names of places across Assam that do not reflect the culture and civilisation of the state Theres much in a name Name of a city town or village should represent its culture tradition and civilisation We shall launch a portal to invite suggestions on change of names across Assam which are contrary to our civilisation culture and derogatory to any caste or community the chief minister had tweeted Several Twitter users had questioned the need for changing names when the government should be concentrating more on constructive works like building proper roads and infrastructure in the state The Assam cabinet had decided in September last to rename the Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park PTI SSG KK KK KK

Guwahati Jan 18 PTI Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the roadmap for amicable settlement of border disputes with Meghalaya in six areas of difference has been prepared through mutual consultations at the top level of the two governments The opposition Congress however called for more discussion on the matter particularly in the state Assembly saying that the government has proposed an approach in which both states would lose or get some areasOur efforts to resolve Assam-Meghalaya border row have started bearing fruits as 6 of the 12 areas of difference have been identified for resolution in the first phase Sarma tweeted after an interaction with leaders of political parties of the state on the Assam-Meghalaya boundary disputeThe areas of differences taken up for final settlement in the first phase are Hahim Gizang Tarabari Boklapara Khanapara-Pillingkata and Ratacherra he addedOut of the 12 points of disputes between Assam and Meghalaya these six areas with relatively less critical differences have been taken up in the first phaseA roadmap for amicable settlement has been prepared based on recommendations of 3 Regional Committees with representatives from both the states Weve reached this stage after several rounds of CM-level talks on the matter Sarma saidRepresentatives of various political parties such as the Congress CPIM Asom Gana Parishad Bodoland Peoples Front and the All India United Democratic Front were present at the meeting They were briefed on the progress made in the talks so far the chief minister saidIn the Twitter post Sarma did not go into details of the roadmap for amicable settlement Talking to PTI after the meeting Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia of the Congress said a very small portion of the area that is under dispute between the two states has been taken up for resolutionThe government has proposed a give-and-take approach where both states will let go or receive almost an equal area We feel that there should be a discussion in the Assembly before any proposal is finalised Saikia saidThe Congress has asked for a discussion on the findings of the regional committees in the Assembly he saidWe were shown a presentation on the matter the Congress leader saidSaikia questioned the absence of Border Area Development Minister Atul Bora in the meetingHe not only is the minister directly involved but also heads one of the three regional committees Only two ministers were present in such a crucial meeting Saikia saidRanoj Pegu minister for education and welfare of plain tribes backward classes and Ashok Singhal minister for housing urban affairs and irrigation attended the meetingSaikia said more discussions on the matter were required especially in the Assembly Chief Minister Sarma had on January 12 said that both governments have arrived at mutual understanding over these six areas of boundary dispute and an agreement can be expected within this month if civil society organisations and opposition political parties come on the same page as the governmentsIn principle both governments have reached a consensus that our assessments on the disputes are the same he had said after a meeting with his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma hereFour rounds of chief ministerial level talks between Sarma and Sangma have taken place over the border issue since Sarma assumed office in May last yearThree committees each were formed by the two state governments in August 2021 after the first two rounds of talks between Sarma and Sangma to resolve the vexed border disputes in a phased mannerMeghalaya was carved out of Assam as a separate state in 1972 and it had challenged the Assam Reorganisation Act 1971 leading to disputes at 12 areas in different parts of the shared 8849 km long border PTI SSG NN NN
