Guwahati Apr 20 PTI Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu here on Wednesday and announced that the two Northeastern states will form district-level committees to resolve the longstanding border disputes in a time-bound mannerThis was the second chief ministerial-level meeting between the two states over the boundary issue Sarma said in a series of tweetsThe two northeastern neighbours had previously met over the issue on January 24 this year during which Arunachal Pradesh climbed down from its initial demand of transfer of 1119279 sq km land to 859 sq kmWe decided to form district-level committees in both the states to resolve the issue in a time-bound mannerThe district committees will undertake joint surveys in the disputed areas to find tangible solutions to the long-pending issue based on historical perspective ethnicity contiguity peoples will and administrative convenience of both the states the Assam chief minister saidThe terms of reference of the committees were also finalised at the meeting Sarma saidAssam Border Area Development Minister Atul Bora and chief secretaries and senior officials of both the states were present at the meetingAssam and Arunachal Pradesh share an 8041-km-long border and there are 1200 points of dispute along it Arunachal Pradesh has a grievance that the re-organisation of North Eastern states unilaterally transferred several forested tracts in the plains that had traditionally belonged to hill tribal chiefs and communities to AssamAfter Arunachal Pradesh achieved statehood in 1987 a tripartite committee was appointed which recommended that certain territories be transferred from Assam to Arunachal Assam contested this and the matter is before the Supreme CourtArunachal Pradesh was a centrally-administered region initially after Independence and became a Union Territory later before attaining full statehood in 1987Besides Arunachal Pradesh Assam also has boundary disputes with Meghalaya Nagaland and Mizoram and soon after assuming office in May last year Sarma has been making efforts to resolve these through negotiations PTI SSG MM MM

Guwahati Dec 22 PTI The Assam Assembly on Wednesday passed The Assam Motor Vehicle Taxation Amendment Bill 2021 paving the way for levy of tax on air-conditioned sleeper coaches Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary who moved the bill in the House accepted an amendment brought by the Opposition demanding a decrease in the rate of tax to be imposed under the legislation The amendment bill had proposed to levy Rs 9000 annual tax on fully built air-conditioned sleeper contract carriage buses with seats or berths up to 20 Conceding to the Opposition demand the rate was decreased to Rs 8000 per annum However the rate for similar buses with a seat or berth capacity of over 20 was kept at Rs 12000 per annum as proposed in the bill though the Opposition had asked for a reduction in it also The Assam government did not have any provision for the imposition of Motor Vehicle Tax on this category of bus before the passage of the amendment bill The state Assembly also passed The Assam Cooperative Societies Amendment Bill 2021 moved by Cooperation Minister Atul Bora The provision in the principal act that disallowed registration of any society in an area where another cooperative society already existed with similar objectives except with special permission has been removed in the amended bill PTI SSG MM MM

Guwahati Dec 20 PTI The Assam government on Monday introduced an amendment bill in the state assembly for issuing transit passes for liquor from neighbouring states passing through Assam The Assam Excise Amendment Bill 2021 placed by Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya seeks to replace the Assam Excise Amendment Ordinance 2021The bill said in view of long porous borders with neighbouring states the Assam excise department has to constantly struggle to check transportation and smuggling of liquor To monitor the movement of liquor transiting through Assam it was essential to introduce a system of transit pass and due to urgency of the matter an ordinance was promulgated on September 15 it said The Assam Cooperative Societies Amendment Bill 2021 was also introduced in the House by the departments minister Atul Bora It proposes to delete the provision in the principal act that disallowed registration of any society under the act in an area where there already exists another cooperative society with similar objectives except with special permission Through the amendment it is sought to bring competitiveness and professionalism among the cooperatives and end monopoly the bill said PTI SSG NN NN
