New Delhi Apr 23 PTI A week after the communal clashes in northwest Delhis Jahangirpuri most of the shops remained shut on Saturday as shopkeepers cited restricted movement and barricading to be the main hurdle in running their businessesThe grievance comes despite the Delhi Police clarifying a day earlier that it never stopped people from opening shops in the areaShopkeepers in and around violence-hit C-Block said there is no business due to barricades and that is the reason they are not opening shopsHowever some movement was permitted in the region as locals including school students were seen using the barricaded roads and passing through Kushal Chowk on footNevertheless vehicular movement is still restricted in the area The situation though remained calm a day after members from both the communities declared restoration of peace in the area and agreed to live in harmony during a meeting of aman committeesSecurity personnel were seen manning the roads but their numbers have significantly reduced from previous daysDuring the aman committee meeting on Friday DCP northwest Usha Rangnani had urged the people to maintain peace and clarified that she never stopped the opening of shopsI have never stopped the shops in H and G blocks of Jahangirpuri from opening I do not know why these shops are closed We will facilitate the opening of shops and businesses in these blocks she underlinedA majority of shop owners told PTI that they are not opening their establishments as there is no sales due to the barricadesAkbar who owns a mobile shop at Kushal Chowk alleged that he was stopped by police in the morning when he came to open the shopI came in the morning to collect something from the shops but I was stopped So I returned home he saidSaddam who runs a shop beside Akbars said he was not aware that he can open the storeA senior Delhi Police official reiterated that no one is being stopped from running their business in the regionManjeet who runs a dhaba food stall at Kushal chowk told PTI over phone that there is no business as roads are barricaded adding that he is planning to open the shop after EidThe workers have already left for their villages There is no point in opening the establishment now as nobody will come because the roads are barricaded he saidHe also expressed hope that the situation will get better in the coming days and all shops will be openedRajesh Mishra who owns a pet accessory shop in H-Block said A food stall was opened here on Friday but the owner had no sale for the whole day and the entire food got wasted So there is no point in opening shops as of now PTI VA SLB SRY

New Delhi Apr 22 PTI As Jahangirpuris C-Block remains heavily barricaded and under tight security following last weeks violence several residents Friday said they are unable to open their shops or go to work due to restriction on movement which is affecting their livelihoods Home to mostly people belonging to lower income groups C-Block was the epicentre of communal clashes on Saturday Its residents generally work either at factories or have small businesses like scrap dealing mechanic shops vegetable and fruit stalls and general stores Some of them said on Friday that their businesses were also hit by a North Delhi Municipal Corporation anti-encroachment drive on Wednesday as the agencys bulldozers tore down some makeshift and some concrete structures before the Supreme Court intervened and ordered status quo Security has been beefed up in the area now and it remains heavily barricaded Large contingents of police and paramilitary forces guarded the area on Friday Police said the barricading will stay for some more days Locals claimed that police were not allowing them to move freely and open their shops Anwara Bibi a C-Block resident said the barricading and restriction on peoples movement is affecting their livelihoodsThis barricading is creating a major trouble for us I and my 17-year old son are scrap-dealers We are poor people Authorities are least bothered about our livelihoods We are not being able to earn our daily bread How long will this go on she asked She said her husband does not earn and her family is dependent on her and her son We are a family of four I have to pay the rent of my house How will we go on without earnings My family is dependent on me and my son she told PTI Akbar 25 another local said his mobile repair shop at Kushal Chowk has been shuttered for the past six days and it was becoming difficult for him to survive without any earning I started this shop five months back and now for the last six days I am unable to open it How will I feed my family of eight people I pay Rs 15000 rent for this shop every month I have also taken a loan for which I have to pay an EMI of Rs 15000 I have no idea what will happen Akbar lamented Delhi Police Special Commissioner Law Order eastern zone Deependra Pathak said they are keeping a vigil in the area through CCTV cameras also Barricading will remain for a few more days Situation today is better than previous days and we are keeping an eye on law and order here he said Inward and outward movement at C-Block was regulated by the security personnel but students in uniform and those going for an exam were allowed to move Media entry was also restricted on Thursday PTI VA ABU AKM AKM TIR TIR
