Chennai Nov 30 PTI The water level in Mullaperiyar dam touched 142 feet on Tuesday and the storage is in line with the norms set forth by the Central Water Commission the Tamil Nadu government said The water level reached 142 feet at 355 AM and 168246 cusecs of water was released from the dam gradually Tamil Nadu authorities in charge of dam operations said It was done after issuing three advance alerts to counterparts in Kerala they added Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan said the water level stored up to 142 feet on the morning of November 30 is in conformity with the CWCs Rule Curve norm Following the Supreme Courts order of May 7 2014 which said that water could be stored upto 142 feet the Mullaperiyar dams storage has touched 142 feet for the fourth time on Tuesday he said in a statement The Rule Curve is about pre-determination of storage in the dam and its regulation as per a month-wise storage chart Considering monsoon rains and inflow of flood waters the RC covers storage and regulation water release aspects he added As per this norm the storage for every 10 days is determined from June 10 to November 30 during the monsoon season Hence as per the CWC approved RC standards water was stored up to 142 feet on November 30 morning the Minister said On days when the dam receives excessive inflows water is discharged as per the Standard Operating Procedure only after duly informing the Kerala authorities well in advance he noted As per the apex court order the storage can be increased to 152 feet after completion of pending strengthening work Though there are some hurdles in doing it all efforts and steps will be taken continuously to complete the tasks in consultation with Chief Minister M K Stalin the minister said In Kerala the pronunciation used is Mullaperiyar and in Tamil Nadu it is Mullaiperiyar The dam is in Keralas Idukki District PTI VGN COR VGN SS SS

New Delhi Nov 23 PTI The Delhi governments pilot project to recharge groundwater at Palla has recorded the highest rise of up to 25 metres in the groundwater level in its third and final year on the back of a record-breaking rainfall this monsoon officials said on TuesdayThe groundwater level in the area -- on the northern outskirts of the capital near the Delhi-Haryana border -- had risen up to 13 metres in 2019 and up to 2 metres in 2020 the officer saidThe three-year pilot project which involved retaining excess Yamuna water in shallow reservoirs on the floodplains during the monsoon season has been completed Overall it has yielded very good results an official told PTIThe Palla pilot project is a part of the Delhi governments endeavour to augment the citys water supplyWe have recorded an increase of 05 to 25 metres in groundwater levels this year the highest in the entire project period Certainly the record rainfall has a major role to play the official saidThe project report will be submitted within a week to a committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal the Centre and the Delhi government Senior scientists will analyze the resultsAccording to the official the project will be scaled up based on the recommendations of all stakeholders including the Central Water Commission Upper Yamuna River Board Central Ground Water Board Delhi Pollution Control Committee Central Pollution Control BoardAfter getting approval from the National Green Tribunal the Delhi government started the project in August 2019 on 40 acres of land along the Yamuna floodplains near PallaWhile gram sabhas owned 10 acres of this land the government had acquired 30 acres from farmers on a three-year leaseThe government then created a 25-acre pond on the floodplains of the Yamuna to retain floodwater in the monsoon season and installed 33 piezometers to ascertain the rise in groundwater levels PTI GVS NSD NSD

Chennai Oct 30 PTI The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday asked the media to refrain from misreporting on the Mullaperiyar Dam in the interest and wellbeing of both the States - Tamil Nadu and Kerala and said only 500 cusecs of water against 514 according to some news reports was released by the Tamil Nadu State Water Resources Department officials with prior intimation to Kerala Flaying a section of media for inaccurately reporting that the dam water was released by Kerala on Friday The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan said The misreporting on the Mullaperiyar Dam in a section of media appears to be intentional This should be avoided in the interest and wellbeing of the States concerned he said in a statement here Explaining the Minister said the Madurai regional Water Resources Department decided to open the dam after taking into account the surging water-level in the reservoir It was opened on the morning of October 28 by the engineers of the Water Resources Department as the water in the dam continued to rise Prior intimation was given to Kerala government as per the standing guidelines and the water was released in the presence of the Kerala Water Resources Minister and Kerala officials he said This being the case a section of the media falsely reported that the Kerala government had opened the dam the Minister said and recalled his statement on Friday that 500 cusecs of water was let out from 730 AM As per the storage position at 8 AM today the reservoir has 13885 feet water with an inflow of 3404 cusecs About 2340 cusecs of water was drawn through the tunnel to the Vaigai Dam with a discharge of 875 cusecs he said The quantum of water to be released would vary according to the inflows the Minister added Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department is monitoring the level of water in the dam on a regular basis as accorded by the Central Water Commission CWC and as per the order of the Supreme Court There is no doubt that the dam can impound water up to the permitted level of 142 feet depending upon the inflows from November 30 It is the Tamil Nadu government which owns maintains and operates the Mullaperiyar Dam located in Kerala as per the 999-year lease agreement signed by Tamil Nadu and Kerala in 1886 he pointed out Earlier in the day AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam demanded the Chief Minister M K Stalin to clarify on media reports claiming 514 cusecs water was released from the dam by Kerala PTI JSP NVG NVG

Chennai Oct 27 PTI The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday told Kerala the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam stood at 13760 ft as on date and informed it was drawing the maximum quantity of water as sought by the latter The current water level was well within the storage level compliant with the upper rule levels approved by the Central Water Commission CWC Chief Minister M K Stalin said in response to a letter by his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday With reference to Mullai Periyar Dam we are monitoring the water level closely and the officials from our side are in constant touch with your team The water level as on today 27102021 at 900 am is 13760 feet with an inflow of 2300 cusecs We are already drawing the maximum quantity of water through the tunnel in Vaigai dam as requested in your letter Currently 2300 cusecs of water is being drawn through the tunnel to Vaigai basin since 800 am today Stalin said in an official communication to Vijayan Vijayan had earlier written to Stalin requesting him to ensure that maximum quantity of water is drawn from the dam as the reservoir level may reach 142 feet once the torrential rains intensified in Kerala He had sought the TN CMs timely intervention in the matter and requested him to give immediate directions to the authorities concerned to ensure that maximum quantity of water is drawn through the tunnel to Vaigai Dam and to gradually release the water downstream Stalin further said he has discussed the situation with the officials concerned and directed them to continue to monitor the water levels and regulate the outflow accordingly In addition I have specifically asked them to share in advance all the necessary information on water position and release if any so that your government can initiate such precautionary measures needed before the release of water he added Stalin assured Vijayan that his government will ensure that the interests of both states and the people are well safeguarded The Government of Tamil Nadu and the people were very concerned about the floods and the resultant damages suffered by Kerala and its people in the last 10 days Stalin said and assured we will stand with you during these difficult times and would extend any help that is needed for alleviating the sufferings of the people In this regard I have already instructed the Collectors of the border districts of our state to extend all help and ensure the supply of all items needed for flood relief he said PTI SA BN BN
