Mumbai Dec 22 PTI Actor Ayushmann Khurrana says his attempt with his film choices is to break societal taboos but he constantly tries to reinvent himself as he does not want the genre to become formulaic for himIn films like the Shubh Mangal Saavdhan series Bala or his latest Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui the actor has touched upon themes ranging from homophobia transphobia premature balding and erectile dysfunction with the constant thread of ones identity at its centreIn an interview with PTI Khurrana said taboo subjects intrigue him as they are a great fodder for conversationsIt is important that these subjects are placed in a middle class conservative backdrop because otherwise there will be no conflict If you place any of it in an upper class woke household there will be no conflict It has to be a regressive conservative family so that there is some changeThat conflict invokes humour and eventually gives out a social message in a palatable way Even if I do a generic film it has to be a conversation starter a value addition Otherwise what is the fun of doing cinema The 37-year-old actor is aware that many feel films on taboo subjects have become his go-to genre Khurrana said he does not mind the perception but is careful to not fall in a patternAs an actor my challenge is to regularly break the genre and that will happen with films like Anek and Action Hero coming up As someone who feels cinema should be used responsibly how do we do something different with a taboo subject It cannot be a formulaIn certain films I am the active part of the subject--like the Shubh Mangal series-- while in others like Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui or Dum Laga Ke Haisha I am the reactive part I have to choose the side I cant always be the same But it is important to have taboo breaking subjects on screen If that is my genre so be it he addedBut Khurrana said the task of hunting for braver scripts is a tedious exercise Out of an average of 100 scripts the actor finds only one interesting material worthy to be translated on the big screenMuch of Khurranas attempt then is to consistently choose scripts which have the potential to speak to a larger audienceWith many exposed to content from across the world thanks to the streaming platforms he said it is impossible to be mediocre todayThe audience today expects nothing but the best In the past two years they have watched content from across the world and a lot of good stuff In the last two years they have progressed ten yearsA certain section has regressed ten years too There is a dichotomy out there People will be unforgiving now because they are exposed to international cinema Vanilla may not work anymore he added PTI JUR BK BK

Mumbai Dec 17 PTI Actor Ayushmann Khurrana says authentic representation for movies with LGBTQ characters is crucial but his experience in the past has also made him aware that it is not easy to get actors from the community on board for projectsKhurrana starred in last years rom-com Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan in which he played one-half of a gay couple with Jitendra Kumar and recently featured in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui where his co-star Vaani Kapoor essayed the role of a trans womanThough Kapoors performance was lauded by many a section felt it would have been better if a trans person could play the partIn an interview with PTI Khurrana acknowledged the debate but said getting the representation right is not easyI dont think we are there as a society There is a lot of difference between us and the West For Shubh Mangal we got in touch with a lot of closeted gay actors and asked if they were ready to come out and do the film Because we wanted representation But they refused saying they would get typecast and would never be able to play a hetero male character It was impossible to get a gay actor but we tried our best Shubh Mangal was a case study for Khurrana 37 and the team after seeing how a section of the viewers was apprehensive about stepping out to watch a gay romance when released last year he saidThe actor said the Abhishek Kapoor directorial deliberately masked its actual subject of transphobia in its promotions and created the illusion of just another regular romantic comedy to at least get the audience inWe made a conscious effort of marketing the film a certain way We thought people should discover the subject while they watch the film it should come as a surprise In my last outing Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan a lot of people from two-tier cities didnt go for the film because they were put off by the fact that two men were kissingWe thought if we put our subject out in the open and in the trailer it wont appeal to the wider audience That is why we had to create an illusion of a rom-com This film is a great baby step towards representation In the times to come there will be an actor from the trans community speaking for the community That is only fair the mic has to be passed he addedChandigarh Kare Aashiqui features Khurrana as Manu a transphobic man who eventually undergoes a transformationThe 37-year-old actor said the film directly aims to speak to the general audience who are not progressive and are quick to dismiss gender identitiesThe reactive Manu represents the masses who are as regressive as anyone out there he is not aware His transformation means the transformation of the common man on the street That was interesting for me It was easy to understand him because I know people like him They could be anyone from rich or poor families because it is a mindset While Khurrana instantly boarded the project he described Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui as his riskiest project yetEverything the actor said depended on how the films narrative would treat its central conflictThe treatment matters in a film like this It could have gone either way It needed someone like Abhishek who is a progressive person I knew the school of thought he comes from and the worldview he has So we were in safe hands It is my riskiest film ever It deals with transphobiaIt is difficult for the masses to digest The regular Joe on the street is transphobic and homophobic which is why it was my riskiest film But I was never in two minds The film theatrically released on December 10 PTI JUR RDS RB RB
