Mumbai Apr 25 PTI The Crime Intelligence Unit CIU probing the Angadia traditional couriers extortion case is likely to visit Uttar Pradesh soon to trace suspended Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Saurabh Tripathi an absconding accused in the case an official said on Monday He said the crime branch has sought permission from top officers to travel to Kanpur where Tripathis residence is located A team of four officials including an Assistant Police Inspector API will travel to UP he added Earlier the crime branch had arrested assistant sales tax commissioner Ashutosh Mishra brother-in-law of Tripathi from Basti in Uttar Pradesh During the probe the CIU found that Mishra had received the money allegedly extorted by DCP Tripathi who was then posted in Mumbai A complaint filed last December by the Angadia Association in south Mumbai had alleged that Tripathi demanded Rs 10 lakh per month from them as a bribe to allow them to run their business smoothly The complaint had initially named three policemen of the Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station The officers- inspector Om Wangate API Nitin Kadam and PSI Samadhan Jamdade and the domestic help of Tripathi were arrested in the case The Maharashtra government suspended Tripathi who is a wanted accused in the extortion case last month He is yet to be arrested As per the complaint lodged by angadias the accused officials had allegedly extorted money from them on several occasions in December by threatening to tip off the Income Tax department about their cash movements and business activities The angadias complaint was probed by Additional Commissioner South Region Dilip Sawant on directions of the then city police commissioner Hemant Nagrale PTI ZA NSK NSK

Mumbai Feb 24 PTI Mumbai police on Thursday transferred IPS officer Saurabh Tripathi from the post of DCP Zone-2 and appointed him as DCP Operations as an exceptional case and in the interest of public an official said During his posting as DCP Zone-2 three policemen in his zone were charged with extorting money police said Tripathi will be replaced by IPS officer Shashikumar Meena as DCP Zone-2 as additional charge an official said During Tripathis posting as DCP Zone-2 an offence of extortion was registered against a police inspector an assistant police inspector and a police sub inspector posted at Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station The crime intelligence unit CIU of the crime branch which investigating the case had arrested two officers whereas one police inspector is still absconding officials said PTI DC NP NP

Mumbai Feb 19 PTI The Mumbai police on Saturday registered an offence against three policemen for allegedly robbing and extorting money from angadias and their employees in south Mumbai an official said The Mumbai polices crime branch has arrested assistant police inspector Nitin Kadam and sub-inspector Samadhan Jamdade while inspector Om Vangate of Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station is a wanted accused he said An FIR was registered against the accused officers based on a complaint lodged by additional commissioner of police Dilip Sawant South after the police received several complaints about them he said The police had received complaints from the Angadias Association of Bhuleshwar on December 7 2021 the official said Angadias offer courier services to transfer money diamonds and jewellery for a fee The association had alleged that the accused had restrained angadias and their employees and extorted money from them after taking them to Mumbadevi Chowky he said A probe revealed that on December 2 3 4 and 6 the accused had intercepted an angadia businessman and his employee and extorted money from them he said These activities were also captured by the CCTV cameras of Mumbadevi Chowky the official said An FIR under sections 392 robbery 384 extortion 341wrongful restraint 34 common intention was registered at Lokamanya Tilak Marg police station he said The case was then transferred to the crime intelligence unit CIU of the crime branch which arrested API Kadam and PSI Jamdade the official said adding that further probe is underway The policemen were remanded to police custody till February 21 PTI DC ARU NSK NSK

Mumbai Jan 21 PTI Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh on Friday told an inquiry commission that he had received several complaints after now dismissed assistant inspector Sachin Waze was appointed as head of Mumbai polices Crime Intelligence Unit Deshmukh is currently deposing before Justice K U Chandiwal Commission which is probing corruption allegations leveled against him by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh The NCP leader is being cross examined by Waze Responding to a query Deshmukh said I received some complaints as Waze was under suspension for about 14-15 years and after his reinstatement he was appointed as Head CIU Generally if a suspended officer is reinstated he is posted to a side branch Deshmukh told the commission several complaints were oral and he cannot name those who had made these adding that the Home department may have received written complaints as well Sachin Waze was posted in Crime Branch and on the oral direction of then police commissioner Param Bir Singh he was appointed as chief of CIU he said adding that then Joint Commissioner of Police Santosh Rastogi took objection to Wazes posting as CIU head While responding to another question the senior NCP leader said he had suggested to the chief minister to set up a committee to probe the malicious false allegations made in Singhs letter Deshmukh also said he was not party to the government resolution GR dated March 30 last year to set up a single-member commission to probe the allegations against him I had requested the chief minister for appointment of a committee and he may have thereafter initiated such a committee I learnt about the Government Resolution when it was published I do not recollect the source of my information may be my secretary or may be from any other department or outside person Deshmukh added His cross examination will continue on Monday The Maharashtra government had in March last year formed a commission under Justice Chandiwal retired to probe Singhs allegations against Deshmukh Singh who was transferred from the post of Mumbai police commissioner in March in the aftermath of the Antilia bomb scare episode had claimed Deshmukh had asked police officers to collect Rs 100 crore a month from bars and restaurants in the city The Central Bureau of Investigation CBI and the Enforcement Directorate ED are also probing the allegations made against Deshmukh by Singh Deshmukh is currently in judicial custody following his arrest by ED in a money laundering case PTI AVI BNM BNM BNM
